Milwaukee - Shane McClanahan's Comeback: A Journey of Resilience
Shane McClanahan's journey back to the mound has been a tale of resilience and determination. After being sidelined for over two years due to injuries, the 28-year-old lefty is set to make his first big-league start since August 2023. The road back has been anything but easy, with McClanahan navigating the aftermath of an elbow injury that led to Tommy John surgery and a subsequent nerve issue in 2025.
Now, after 972 days, McClanahan is ready to face the Brewers on Tuesday night. His excitement is palpable.
"I’m allowing myself to feel a little more joyous and savor each moment out there," McClanahan shared. "I’m proud of that.
I’m going to take it all in and try to help us win the ball game."
Spring training was a promising period for McClanahan, despite a scare when he was hit by a line drive during a live batting practice session. He’s been focusing on refining his approach, opting for precision over power, aiming to become more of a strategic pitcher.
"I’m treating it day by day," he explained. "I’m more excited now, compared to the anxiousness I felt before."
Manager Kevin Cash is equally thrilled about McClanahan's return. "I’m just excited for him to get on the mound and help us win a game," Cash said. "We’re a better club when he’s pitching every fifth day."
McClanahan's career stats speak volumes: a 33-16 record, a 3.02 ERA over 404 2/3 innings, and 456 strikeouts. He’s been an All-Star twice and finished sixth in the American League Cy Young voting in 2022. His return could be a game-changer for the team.
Meanwhile, veteran outfielder Jake Fraley is back in action after some rest and treatment for his shoulder, which he aggravated during a recent game. "It’s something I’ve dealt with for years," Fraley noted. "Certain plays just aggravate it, but it’s about staying on top of it."
The Rays have been making waves with their performance, leading the majors with 41 hits through Sunday. As they continue their road games, fans are eager to see how McClanahan’s return will bolster their lineup.
Stay tuned for more updates on McClanahan’s comeback and the Rays’ journey this season.
