Ryan Vilade Stuns Fans by Making Rays Roster Over Fan Favorite

Rays' surprising roster shake-up sees newcomer Ryan Vilade leapfrog over fan favorite Richie Palacios, signaling strategic moves ahead of Opening Day.

As the Tampa Bay Rays gear up for their Opening Day clash against the Cardinals, their roster decisions are taking shape, with a few surprises that have sparked conversation among fans. The most notable move? Ryan Vilade's addition to the roster, while Richie Palacios heads to Triple-A.

The Rays snagged Vilade from the Reds in an offseason deal that only cost them cash, and it might just turn out to be a savvy move. Vilade steps in as a crucial utility player off the bench, a role previously held by Palacios. Unfortunately for Palacios, injuries derailed his 2025 season, and his .239 average with 24 RBIs over 109 games wasn't enough to secure his spot this year.

Competing for two utility spots were Ben Williamson, Richie Palacios, and Ryan Vilade. With Vilade making the cut, Williamson is likely to fill the second bench role. Williamson joined the Rays via a three-team trade involving the Mariners and Cardinals.

Vilade, drafted by the Rockies in 2017, has shown promise in the minors with a .280 average and over 400 RBIs. However, his major league stint has been less impressive, hitting just .141 in 28 games across three seasons. Despite this, his .220 average in spring training was enough for the Rays to give him a shot in 2026.

Several factors influenced this decision. Vilade's right-handed bat is a valuable addition to a lineup heavy on lefties, including Cedric Mullins, Jonathan Aranda, Gavin Lux, Jake Fraley, and Chandler Simpson.

Additionally, Vilade is out of minor league options, meaning he would have faced waivers if not added to the roster. This way, the Rays can test his potential while keeping Palacios ready for a call-up if needed.

As the season unfolds, the Rays' strategic roster choices will be put to the test, and fans will be eager to see how Vilade fits into the lineup.
