Rays Spring Training Update: Injuries, Dreams, and Dingers
The Tampa Bay Rays are kicking off their spring training with a mix of anticipation and caution. Taylor Walls, expected to be the starting shortstop, had to be scratched from his debut against the Pirates due to tightness in his left oblique.
Given Walls' history with injuries, the Rays are playing it safe, especially with the less-than-ideal weather conditions after a morning rain. Bench coach Rodney Linares, stepping in for manager Kevin Cash, assured fans that Walls should be fine soon, as the team aims to avoid any unnecessary risks.
Walls, 29, has faced challenges with injuries in four of his five MLB seasons, including a significant oblique strain in 2023. After feeling some tightness during pregame activities, the decision to rest him seemed prudent.
Meanwhile, infield prospect Jadher Areinamo also left the game with right hamstring tightness after looking uncomfortable on the bases. The Rays will monitor his condition closely.
On a brighter note, Jake Woodford, a local talent from St. Petersburg, fulfilled a lifelong dream by pitching for the Rays.
Having previously played for the Cardinals, White Sox, Pirates, and Diamondbacks, Woodford delivered an impressive 18-pitch, one-hit first inning. With family, including his young son Jett, in the stands, it was a memorable day for him.
Behind the plate, catcher Hunter Feduccia demonstrated his skills with the new Automated Ball-Strike system, successfully challenging three out of four pitches. Though his day at bat was less fruitful, going 0-for-2 with a walk, his defensive prowess stood out.
Outfield prospect Jacob Melton made a statement with a towering home run, clocked at 104.7 mph, that soared beyond the right-field fence. Linares humorously estimated its distance as "really far."
In other highlights, reliever Griffin Jax showcased his skills with a one-hit, three-strikeout inning. The game itself was action-packed, featuring 306 pitches, multiple walks, and a handful of pitch-clock violations.
Looking ahead, Drew Rasmussen is set to make his spring debut against the Red Sox, with regulars like Junior Caminero, Yandy Diaz, and Jonathan Aranda expected to play. The Rays are eager to see how their roster shapes up as the season approaches.
Stay tuned for more updates as the Rays continue their journey through spring training, balancing caution with the excitement of new beginnings.
