Rays Suddenly Face A Brutal ALCS Problem In Cleveland

With a packed Progressive Field as their backdrop, the Guardians' explosive performance-and Petey Halpin's heroic homer-tilted the ALCS scales against the struggling Rays.

The Guardians are one step from the World Series after taking Game 3 of the ALCS, 3-2, on Thursday at Progressive Field, and they did it with the kind of moment that can swing a series in a hurry.

Petey Halpin delivered the big blow in the bottom of the fifth, launching a go-ahead, two-run homer off Griffin Jax to flip the game Cleveland’s way. Halpin then added a bat flip to match the swing, sending his bat spinning high above him after the ball landed in the right-field bleachers.

“I don’t know, I think I blacked out,” Halpin said when asked about his bat-flip. “I’m not sure what I was doing, to be completely honest. But it was fun.”

Before Halpin’s blast, the afternoon had already taken on a playoff-edge feel in Cleveland. The game was moved up from 6 p.m.

ET to a 1 p.m. first pitch, but that didn’t slow the crowd down. Guardians fans filled the ballpark and spent the day riding every pitch, then shook the stadium loose when the homer changed the game.

Gavin Williams gave Cleveland exactly what it needed on the mound. He turned in another brilliant outing, striking out nine Rays over five innings and keeping Tampa Bay from ever finding a comfortable rhythm. In this postseason alone, Williams has piled up 33 strikeouts across 16 2/3 innings, and his 45.9% strikeout rate is the highest in MLB history among pitchers with at least 10 innings pitched, ahead of Corey Knebel’s 44.6%.

Tampa Bay did manage to scratch out two runs against him, with Chandler Simpson driving a triple into the right-field corner, but the Rays are still waiting for their top bats to deliver in this series. Junior Caminero, the young star whose first career postseason homer has yet to arrive, remains the biggest name under that spotlight.

For Cleveland, the win means the series now heads into Game 4 with the Guardians in control and two chances to finish the job at home. Game 4 is set for Friday at 6 p.m. ET, though rain is in the forecast and both clubs are preparing for another possible schedule adjustment.

The numbers say teams that win Game 3 of a tied best-of-seven series go on to take the series 71 of 102 times, and in the current 2-3-2 format, clubs that grab Game 3 at home to move up 2-1 have won the series 30 of 49 times.

Jose Ramirez's Costly Meltdown Just Opened A Big Door For Rays

The Rays got a timely boost in Game 2 of the American League Championship Series when Guardians third baseman Jose Ramirez helped turn one fourth-inning sequence into a mess. Cleveland wound up handing Tampa Bay three runs in the inning, a swing that changed the feel of the game and gave the Rays a much-needed opening as the series moved forward.

Ramirez owned the mistakes afterward and said the inning was frustrating, while Guardians manager Stephen Vogt stressed that sloppy plays have to be cleaned up before the series shifts back to Cleveland. For Tampa Bay, the takeaway is simpler: a postseason inning that looked headed nowhere suddenly became a real advantage, and those are the moments that can linger if the Guardians do not tighten things up quickly. Blake Snell Just Reopened A Kevin Cash Debate Rays Fans Know Well

Blake Snell was back in the postseason spotlight again, and with him came a familiar Rays conversation that never seems to go away. In a recent National League Championship Series game, the Dodgers left-hander worked into the seventh inning before Jake Bauers and Garrett Mitchell went back-to-back for Milwaukee, changing the feel of the game in a hurry and reminding everyone how quickly October can turn on one decision.

For Tampa Bay fans, the debate is unavoidable because Snell has become the face of a long-running theory about pitchers losing effectiveness the deeper they go into a lineup. His career numbers have been used to illustrate that third-time-through-the-order danger, and every time a manager decides to keep him in, it pulls old Rays memories right back to the surface. Dave Roberts choice to stick with him only sharpened the parallels, even if the comparison still leaves plenty for Rays fans to argue about. [Read more 🡒]

Rays Fans Just Got Hit With A Brutal ALCS Game 3 Change

The ALCS is heading into a pivotal Game 3 with the series tied at one win apiece, but the start time has taken a sharp turn. Major League Baseball has pushed first pitch from 6 p.m. EDT to 1 p.m. EDT, with the matchup between the Rays and Guardians still set to air on TBS and related platforms.

Forecasted rain in Cleveland prompted the adjustment, a move MLB made to keep the series on schedule and reduce the risk of weather complications. For Tampa Bay, it means a much different rhythm for a game that suddenly has even more weight, with the next swing in the series now coming in the middle of the day instead of under the lights.
