The Tampa Bay Rays are reaching for another arm as they try to keep this hot stretch rolling.
After finishing a perfect 9-0 trip on the West Coast, Tampa Bay is back home against the Baltimore Orioles and still sitting on the best record in the American League. The Rays have been especially strong at home this season, and that has helped fuel their 6.5-game lead at the top of the league.
Friday’s loss to Baltimore came in a bullpen game for Tampa Bay, with Steven Matz serving as the opener and working the one inning he was asked to handle. Chris Roycroft was one of the bulk arms in that game, and he has since been optioned to the minors.
To replace him, the Rays recalled right-hander Joe Boyle from Triple-A Durham.

It has been a while since Boyle last appeared in the majors for Tampa Bay, with his previous outing coming in April against the Chicago Cubs. He has started all three of his big league appearances this season, but his role now is less clear.
Seymour has given the Rays quality innings both as a starter and out of the bullpen, and Shane McClanahan is expected back soon, which adds another layer to how Tampa Bay may deploy its arms.
Boyle’s numbers in limited action have been rough so far, with a 5.17 ERA in three starts. His Triple-A work has been even tougher, where he has posted an ERA of nearly 10.00.
For now, the expectation is that Boyle will work out of the bullpen as he settles back into the majors.
