Rays Now Have A New Yankees Problem Heading Into The ALDS

Knicks star Josh Hart injects humor while showering praise on Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler after his game-winning performance against the Red Sox.

New York sports fandom got a pretty funny crossover moment when Knicks star Josh Hart went all-in on Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler.

Hart, who helped power the Knicks to the 2026 NBA Championship in June, has never been shy about his Yankees loyalty. After watching Schlittler carve up the Red Sox, he took his praise to another level, comparing the pitcher to Jesus and joking that Schlittler might be the “left hand” of God.

It was the kind of over-the-top compliment that only makes sense when a player has earned it, and Schlittler absolutely did that in Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series. The Yankees right-hander shut down Boston for 6.1 scoreless innings, struck out 10, and helped New York eliminate the Red Sox for the second straight year.

That outing fit right in with what Schlittler has done all season. In his second MLB campaign, he posted a 1.95 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP over 33 starts, went 14-6, and moved into the conversation as one of the favorites for the 2026 American League Cy Young Award.

Hart has been showing his Yankees support in more ways than one, too. He threw out the ceremonial first pitch when New York hosted the Baltimore Orioles on Sept. 25, adding another connection between the Knicks guard and his favorite baseball team.

Now the Yankees move on to the ALDS, where they’ll face the division-winning Tampa Bay Rays in a best-of-five series. Game 1 is set for Saturday at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.

That matchup won’t be easy for New York. The Yankees went 6-7 against Tampa Bay during the regular season and lost the season series, with only two of their wins coming at the Rays’ ballpark.

Still, with Schlittler dealing and Hart cheering from the side, the Yankees have at least one thing going for them: a young pitcher who’s making a serious case for postseason stardom, and a Knicks star who’s clearly ready to keep the praise coming.

Rays Open Yankees Series With One Huge Advantage Still Looming

Drew Rasmussen gets the ball for Tampa Bay as the Rays open their American League playoff series against the Yankees at Tropicana Field, a matchup that already has the feel of a long, tense October grind. The first two games will be in St. Petersburg before the scene shifts to Yankee Stadium for Game 3, and the Rays will have every reason to try to seize control early on their home field.

New York, meanwhile, has not yet announced its Game 1 starter, leaving one of the series biggest early questions unresolved. Even more important for the Yankees is Aaron Judges status, with his calf injury still clouding whether he will be available, a variable that could shape the entire series as much as any pitching decision. Coverage for the opener is set for TBS, truTV and Max. [Read more 🡒]

Rays Now Have A New ALDS Problem To Prepare For

Carlos Rodn did not take the ball in the Yankees Wild Card Series, but he is still very much in the picture for the American League Division Series matchup with the Rays. Aaron Boone has signaled that the left-hander could be lined up to start Game 3 or 4, or even be available out of the bullpen earlier if the Yankees decide they need him sooner.

For Tampa Bay, that adds another layer to an already tricky series plan, because Rodn closed the regular season with strong numbers and also turned in a notable start against the Rays. Whether he shows up as a starter or a reliever, his role now looks flexible enough to force the Rays to prepare for more than one possible version of him. [Read more 🡒]

Rays Get Key Help Back As Kevin Cash Faces Bigger ALDS Call

Chandler Simpson is back in the mix, and so are Tyler Wells and Garrett Cleavinger, giving the Rays a timely boost as the American League Division Series opener approaches. Simpson worked through right foot soreness and has been a full participant in recent scrimmages, while Wells and Cleavinger got through bullpen sessions after dealing with forearm tightness, putting all three in line to join Tampa Bay for the start of the series.

For Kevin Cash, the immediate news is encouraging, but the bigger challenge is still ahead. The manager said the group is ready, yet Tampa Bay is still sorting out its pitching plans beyond Game 1, which leaves the Rays with some important decisions to make as the series gets underway. [Read more 🡒]
