Rays May Be Eyeing The Kind Of Move Fans Have Waited For

The Tampa Bay Rays eye Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal in a potential trade, gearing up for a crucial matchup against the Yankees with aspirations of bolstering their rotation for a World Series run.

If the Tigers ever put Tarik Skubal on the market, the bidding should be fierce. A left-hander with back-to-back AL Cy Young Awards doesn’t come around often, and teams around the league would line up fast if Detroit decided to listen.

One club that could realistically jump into the mix comes from the AL East, according to ESPN’s David Schoenfield: the Tampa Bay Rays.

“Another team in search of a first World Series title -- and the American League will never be easier to win, so this is the year for the [Tampa Bay] Rays to push in all their chips,” Schoenfield wrote.

That idea has even more bite with the standings where they are right now. As of Thursday afternoon, the Rays hold a 3.5-game lead over the Yankees in the division, and the two teams are set to open a crucial four-game series at Tropicana Field on Monday night.

If Tampa Bay stays in position, adding a pitcher like Skubal would be a massive swing. Schoenfield pointed to the Rays’ rotation depth as a reason the fit makes sense, noting that it “despite ranking second in ERA, is thin behind Drew Rasmussen, Shane McClanahan and Nick Martinez, so adding Skubal to front a playoff rotation makes sense.”

He also argued Tampa Bay may be better positioned than Milwaukee to actually land him.

“And, more so than the [Milwaukee] Brewers, it seems the Rays are more likely to make a big deal for Skubal in the first place,” Schoenfield added.

The Rays do have three top 100 prospects, per MLB Pipeline, that they could put on the table in a deal with Detroit.

Skubal wouldn’t come cheap, but for a club still chasing its first World Series title, he fits the kind of aggressive move that could change the entire shape of a pennant race.

Rays Making Room At The Trop For Evan Longoria Weekend

The Rays are turning Tropicana Field into a bigger stage for Evan Longorias Legacy Weekend, opening the upper deck for their July 10-12 series against the Mariners to handle the expected surge of fans. It will be the first time the upper level has been open since the 2023 AL Wild Card Series, a fitting sign of how much this weekend means to a fan base that watched Longoria become one of the defining players in franchise history.

Longorias Rays Hall of Fame induction is set for July 11, with his No. 3 jersey retirement coming before the July 12 game, and the club is layering in plenty of extras around the ceremonies. There will be special giveaways and branded baseballs throughout the weekend, all aimed at making the celebration feel less like a single pregame moment and more like a full-scale tribute to one of the organizations cornerstone names. Rays Stadium Fight Takes Another Turn As Tampa Pushes Back

Tampas long-running stadium debate picked up another wrinkle this week, with council member Bill Carlson reportedly working to trim the citys tax revenue role in the Rays project. The idea would cut Tampas contribution from $100 million to $80 million by moving responsibility for the Community Redevelopment Agency to Hillsborough County, a shift that would ease the citys bill while changing who helps steer some of the public side of the deal.

That adjustment matters because the stadium negotiations are still being finalized, and the money trail is tied to more than just bricks and mortar. If Tampa steps back, the community benefits side of the agreement could look different, with county-backed priorities taking a larger role as the city tries to reduce its exposure without derailing the project.
