The Yankees’ season ended Wednesday in the kind of moment that gets replayed over and over, and this one came with a ruling that left no room for debate.
In Game 3 of the ALDS at Yankee Stadium, New York fell to the Tampa Bay Rays, 4-3, and was swept out of the series. The biggest swing of the night belonged to Anthony Volpe, who appeared to tie the game in the sixth inning with a home run. Instead, the play was overturned and changed to a double after fan interference was ruled on the field.
Victor Mesa Jr. was the first Ray to push for the review after failing to make the catch in right field. Replay showed that a fan reached over the wall to grab the ball, and MLB later backed the call in a statement reported by ESPN’s Jorge Castillo.
“After viewing all relevant angles, the replay official definitively determined the spectator interfered with the ball over the field of play. The ball would not have left the playing field, nor would it have been caught.
The call is OVERTURNED. There was spectator interference and no home run,” said the MLB.
“Additionally, the replay official scored one run and placed the batter-runner at 2B.
The Rays survived from there and advanced to the ALCS for the first time since making it to the World Series in 2020.
For the Yankees, it was a flat finish after arriving in the ALDS on a high note following a sweep of the Boston Red Sox in the wild-card round. It was also the second straight year they were knocked out in the ALDS.
Tampa Bay now waits for the winner of the Cleveland Guardians-Chicago White Sox series, with the White Sox up 2-1 in the best-of-five matchup.

Aaron Judge Turns Rays Sweep Into Yankees Front Office Pressure
Aaron Judge watched from the sideline as the Yankees were swept by the Rays in the American League Division Series, and the moment clearly hit a nerve. Still working his way back from injury, Judge said the club cannot afford to treat the offseason lightly, pressing ownership and the front office to go all-in if New York expects to make a real championship run next year.
For a Yankees team already staring at another disappointing October exit, Judges words only add to the pressure on the people making the decisions. He also spoke about how difficult the elimination was to absorb and noted that his own rehab continues, leaving New York with both an emotional reckoning and an urgent roster question as the winter begins. Jazz Chisholm Just Put His Yankees Future In Focus
The Yankees brief October stay ended with a sweep at the hands of the Rays, and the focus in New York has already shifted to what comes next. Chisholm, a free agent after a down year, has already signaled where hed like things to go. Asked about his future, he said he hopes to return to the Yankees in 2027, but whether New York sees him as part of its long-term infield plan is another question entirely. [Read more 🡒]
Pedro Martinez Just Gave Rays Fans A New Yankees Taunt
Pedro Martinez found a way to sharpen an already heated postseason rivalry after the Rays sent the Yankees home. On the TBS postgame show, the Hall of Fame pitcher pointed to Tampa Bays formula for the series, strong pitching, steady defense and timely hitting, while New Yorks offense never found much rhythm and the defense had its own costly lapses.
The comment landed because it captured how the balance of power has felt lately between these two teams, with the Rays playing cleaner, more complete baseball at just the right time. Martinez made the remark with the kind of swagger that turns a division matchup into a lasting jab, giving Rays fans a fresh line to throw back at Yankees supporters the next time these clubs cross paths.
