Rays' Davidson and Martin Shine in Spring Training Opener Despite Loss

Non-roster invitees Logan Davidson and Trevor Martin shine bright for the Rays despite an overall lackluster start to spring training.

The Rays kicked off their spring training with a 5-1 loss to the Braves, but there's plenty to unpack beyond the final score. Despite managing nine hits, the offense struggled to capitalize, and a few Braves homers shifted the momentum. However, spring games are as much about individual performances as they are about team results, and a couple of non-roster invitees made their mark today.

Logan Davidson Makes a Splash

Logan Davidson, signed to a minor league deal this past December, wasted no time making an impression. The first baseman, brought in to bolster infield depth, launched the first pitch he faced this spring over the right field wall.

That solo shot marked the Rays' only run of the game, but it showcased Davidson's potential pop at the plate. He followed up his homer with a walk, showing patience and discipline.

While his career batting average sits at .167, the 6'3" Davidson could be a valuable backup option, especially with Jonathan Aranda anchoring first base after an All-Star season.

Trevor Martin Shines on the Mound

On the pitching side, Trevor Martin turned heads with a flawless inning. The 2022 third-round pick showcased a fastball that consistently hit 97 mph, leaving hitters guessing.

While it's early in spring training and batters are still finding their rhythm, Martin's performance was a promising sign. After a solid stint in Triple-A Durham last season, where he posted a 3.21 ERA, Martin's velocity and command could soon earn him a call-up to the big leagues.

Spring training is all about glimpses of potential, and both Davidson and Martin provided that today. As the Rays continue to fine-tune their roster, these performances are exactly what the team needs to see from their depth players.
