The Tampa Bay Rays’ bullpen has a chance to go from a question mark to a weapon if the front office makes the kind of move that changes a season.
That move, at least in one recent proposal, would send Padres closer Mason Miller to Tampa Bay. Bleacher Report floated a trade earlier this week that would bring in one of the most overpowering relievers in the game, and the fit is easy to see. The Rays have been searching for more stability in the late innings, and Miller could give them exactly that.
The timing matters, too. Tampa Bay has stumbled out of the second half, dropping four straight against a division rival while trying to stay in the fight for the AL East lead. A deadline splash would be the cleanest way to flip the mood and put the pressure back on the rest of the division.
Miller’s numbers explain why he’s such an appealing target. He owns a 0.89 ERA this season over 40.2 innings and 39 appearances. That kind of production would instantly change the shape of the Rays’ relief corps.
Kevin Kelly and Bryan Baker have already done solid work at the back end. Baker, who made his first All-Star team last week, even got the final out as the American League beat the National League. But the rest of the bullpen has not been nearly as dependable, and that’s where Tampa Bay could use a major upgrade.
As Zachary Rymer wrote for B/R, "Their pen ranks 19th with a 4.27 ERA, and is likewise in the bottom half of MLB in strikeout percentage," said B/R writer Zachary Rymer. "With Miller, the Rays would have a better chance of not just taking the AL East crown, but getting back to the World Series. If anything, they'd become the instant favorites in the AL to do so."
If Tampa Bay landed Miller, it could build a nasty late-game trio with Miller, Baker, and Kelly. Baker and Miller would give Kevin Cash multiple closing options, while Kelly could handle setup duty for either arm. That kind of flexibility would let the Rays cover the whole summer with real save options instead of hoping one arm holds up every night.
And once October arrives, the possibilities get even more dangerous. All three could be deployed wherever the game demands it, turning the bullpen into a high-leverage problem for opponents instead of the Rays.
