The Tampa Bay Rays are rolling into a new week with plenty of momentum and a fresh bump in the national power rankings after a sweep of the San Diego Padres.
Tampa Bay, now 82-54, has won four straight and sits 4.5 games ahead of the New York Yankees in the AL East. That cushion helped push the Rays back into the Top 5 of Bleacher Report’s latest MLB Power Rankings, where they climbed to No. 4 after dropping to sixth a week ago following a rough homestand.
“The Rays are 18-9 in August and have extended their lead in the AL East standings from 2.5 to 4.5 games over the Yankees along the way,” said B/R writer Joel Reuter. “They improved to 46-23 at Tropicana Field with their three-game sweep of the Padres, so securing the AL's best record and home-field advantage will carry extra importance.”
August has been a mixed bag on the surface. Tampa Bay ripped off a 9-0 road trip in the middle of the month, then stumbled through a shaky homestand before righting the ship again. The bigger picture is still favorable: the Rays are winning, and they’re doing it as the calendar flips toward the final month of the regular season.
The pitching has held up despite injuries, and the lineup is starting to do enough to keep the club moving. There’s still work to be done near the bottom of the order, but the overall mix is giving Tampa Bay a real chance to make noise in October.
MLB.com is seeing the same thing. The Rays stayed at No. 4 in that outlet’s latest power rankings, and writer Will Leitch pointed to the atmosphere around Tropicana Field as another sign of how far this season has come.
“It is definitely a sign of how well this season has gone for the Rays that they opened up the upper deck at Tropicana Field this weekend for the first time since the 2023 postseason. One suspects it'll be open this postseason as well, a place the Rays are definitely going to be.”
The front office, led by Erik Neander, also got credit for its work at the trade deadline, where the Rays added the kind of reinforcements that help both the pitching staff and the bats. More help could still be coming soon, with two more players eligible to be called up when rosters expand in September.
The schedule down the stretch leaves little room for error. Tampa Bay has just seven games left against divisional opponents, making every remaining series especially important.
At the top of both rankings, the Milwaukee Brewers are still the team everyone is chasing. They’re 85-52 and hold the best record in baseball.
