Junior Caminero put on a show in the fifth inning Tuesday night, and he capped it with a celebration that brought back memories of Dikembe Mutombo.
With the Rays in front 3-0 and nobody on base in Game 2 of the American League Championship Series, Cleveland’s Steven Kwan lined a 1-1 pitch from Tampa Bay starter Freddy Peralta into the air. Caminero ranged over, left his feet and made the catch to take away a hit.
Then came the flourish: a finger wag that seemed to nod to the late NBA legend Mutombo, the four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award winner who died in 2024.

The play was a big one for Tampa Bay, which entered the night trying to keep from falling into a 2-0 hole against a Guardians team that had opened the series with a 7-3 win Monday. Caminero had gone 1-for-4 in that loss, driving in a run and scoring one, but it wasn’t enough to stop Cleveland from stealing Game 1.
Even with that setback, the Rays still fit the profile of a team capable of turning the series quickly. Caminero remains a leading contender for the AL Most Valuable Player Award, and Tampa Bay earned the postseason’s No. 1 seed in the American League after winning 98 games.
Before this matchup with Cleveland, the Rays had already shown how quickly they could roll through a series, sweeping the New York Yankees in three games in the AL Division Series.

Jose Ramirez Is Suddenly A Much Bigger Problem For The Rays
Jos Ramrez has spent this October looking far more like the version the Rays have had to game-plan for over the years, and Clevelands offense has started to follow his lead. After some early postseason frustration, the Guardians have found more ways to score, and Ramrez was central to the rally that helped them take Game 1 of the ALCS. When a lineup that was scuffling begins to wake up around a star of his caliber, the margin for error gets even slimmer.
Chase DeLauter went so far as to call Ramrez a Hall of Famer, and manager Stephen Vogt sounded confident about the veterans recovery from hand surgery. For Tampa Bay, that only adds to the concern, because Ramrez is no longer just a name on the opposing lineup card, he is the kind of hitter who can change the tone of a series almost by himself, especially when the Guardians are starting to string together better at-bats behind him. Brewers Fans Should Watch What Tampa Bay Does With A Former Arm
The Rays have built a long-running reputation for getting ahead of the market on pitchers, and Drew Rasmussen is the latest name to fit that mold. A former Brewers arm who has become one of Tampa Bays most reliable starters, Rasmussen has turned into the sort of pitcher other clubs keep circling whenever the Rays enter a decision point, especially with the kind of control that usually makes trade talks expensive.
For Milwaukee fans, the connection is easy to see. Tampa Bay has a habit of extracting value before a player reaches the open market, and Rasmussens rise only adds to the intrigue around what the Rays may do next with him. He has been steady enough to draw attention across the league, earned back-to-back All-Star nods, and now sits in that familiar Rays spot where performance, contract status and trade interest all start pulling in different directions. Rays Grab ALCS Momentum After Costly Guardians Mistake
Freddy Peralta gave Tampa Bay exactly the kind of steadiness it needed in Game 2 of the ALCS, keeping the Rays in control while Parker Messick took the ball for Cleveland. The game turned in the fourth inning, when a Guardians miscue gave Tampa Bay a chance to seize the momentum it had been looking for, and the Rays did not let it slip away.
The opening in the inning was enough to tilt the series, and the Rays turned it into a road win that sends the ALCS to Cleveland with Tampa Bay holding the edge. With the next three games shifting to Ohio and Game 3 set for Thursday, the pressure now moves to a Guardians club trying to recover from a costly mistake and a momentum swing it never fully got back.
