Orioles' Westburg Faces Another Setback: Injuries Continue to Challenge Promising Career
Jordan Westburg, the talented third baseman for the Orioles, is once again grappling with injuries that have marred his promising career. Currently sidelined with a partially-torn UCL and oblique soreness, Westburg's latest setback will keep him out until at least May. While the oblique issue seems minor, the UCL injury required a platelet-rich plasma injection, highlighting the ongoing battle he's faced since his major league debut in 2023.
Westburg's time on the field has been limited by a series of injuries, including a broken hand, sprained ankle, strained hamstring, and an index finger sprain. Yet, when healthy, he's shown flashes of brilliance.
An All-Star in 2024, Westburg boasts a career .264/.312/.456 slash line in over 1,000 plate appearances and has demonstrated solid defensive skills at both second and third base. His .269/.317/.497 performance in 101 games before his hand injury in 2024 underscores his potential to be a star for Baltimore.
However, these glimpses of potential have been overshadowed by frequent injuries. Speaking to reporters, Westburg expressed his frustration and uncertainty about his return.
He candidly shared, “I’d like to sit here and say, ‘extremely confident,’ but some of this wears on you mentally.” Despite the doubts, he remains committed to exploring ways to strengthen his body and return to form.
With Westburg and second baseman Jackson Holliday unavailable, the Orioles are exploring other options. Coby Mayo might take over at third base, while recent acquisition Blaze Alexander could fill in at second. Utility man Jeremiah Jackson and third baseman Bryan Ramos are also in the mix for infield time.
Yankees Strengthen International Scouting
In other AL East news, the Yankees are enhancing their international scouting by bringing in Nao Masamoto, a key figure from the Cubs' front office. Known for his success in recruiting talent from Nippon Professional Baseball, Masamoto's addition aims to revitalize the Yankees' efforts in attracting top Japanese players, an area where they've struggled recently.
Rays Deal with Early Spring Training Setbacks
The Rays are dealing with minor setbacks as Spring Training begins. Right-hander Steven Wilson is slowed by a back injury, and shortstop Taylor Walls was scratched from the lineup due to oblique tightness. While Walls' situation is precautionary, the Rays are prepared with Carson Williams as a potential replacement if needed.
As the season approaches, these developments in the AL East highlight the challenges and strategic moves teams are navigating to optimize their rosters.
