Tampa Bay Lightning Recall Max Groshev After Sudden Roster Shift

Looking to bolster their blue line, the Tampa Bay Lightning bring up promising defenseman Max Groshev following a strong AHL showing.

Lightning Recall Max Groshev from AHL Syracuse: Young Defenseman Gets Another Shot

The Tampa Bay Lightning are bringing defenseman Max Groshev back up to the big club, recalling the 24-year-old from their AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch. It’s another step forward in what’s been a quietly impressive season for the young blueliner.

Groshev made his NHL debut earlier this season on December 28 against the Montreal Canadiens, and he made the most of it. In just over 13 minutes of ice time, he notched his first career point with an assist - a solid start for a player still finding his footing at the NHL level.

Back in Syracuse, Groshev’s game has continued to develop. Through 35 games this season, he’s tallied one goal and 13 points, with a team-leading 12 assists among Crunch defensemen.

He’s also logged a plus-8 rating and fired 66 shots on goal - another team-high among defensemen. That kind of production, especially from the back end, shows a player who’s not just holding his own but actively driving play.

At 6-foot-2 and 196 pounds, Groshev brings a solid frame to the blue line, and he’s starting to pair that size with growing confidence in his puck-moving ability. His 158 career AHL games - all with Syracuse - have helped shape a more complete player. Over that span, he’s recorded 18 goals, 57 points, and 55 penalty minutes with a plus-10 rating.

Drafted by Tampa Bay in the third round (85th overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft, Groshev’s path has been steady rather than flashy. But the Lightning have a history of developing talent patiently, and this recall is another sign that they see something in the Russian native’s game worth investing in.

With the Lightning navigating the grind of the regular season and always looking for depth on the blue line, Groshev’s return gives them another option - one who’s earned his shot through consistent play and a growing two-way presence.

Now, it’s all about what he does with this opportunity.
