Lightning Suddenly Have A Cirelli Problem They Cant Ignore

The Lightning are grappling with lineup adjustments after Anthony Cirelli's sudden departure due to an unspecified injury, affecting their forward strategy in upcoming games.

Anthony Cirelli’s night ended early on Tuesday, and the Lightning are left waiting for a clearer picture.

Tampa Bay’s forward left the team’s win over the Vegas Golden Knights after the second period, according to Jesse Granger of The Athletic, and the injury has not been disclosed. The exact moment Cirelli got hurt also wasn’t clear. He was not seen in a video posted by the team to social media showing players walking off the bench after the victory.

Before he exited, Cirelli had already done plenty of damage. The 29-year-old scored twice in Tampa Bay’s six-goal outing before heading to the sideline.

His departure forced the Lightning to lean harder on their centers. Tampa Bay was already dressing 11 forwards and seven defensemen, and Cirelli’s absence meant more work for Brayden Point, Zemgus Girgensons and Conor Geekie. That group finished the job, although the only third-period goal came on a Nikita Kucherov breakaway.

If Tampa Bay needs to fill the spot in the lineup, the team has two extra forwards on hand in Dominic James and Scott Sabourin. James looks like the more natural candidate to get the call.

The 24-year-old has appeared in two games for the Lightning this season, picking up one assist and one penalty, and he also played two AHL games to open the year without a point. Last season, James recorded 15 points in 43 games as a rookie and established himself as a versatile playmaker.

Sabourin offers a different kind of option. If the Lightning want more physicality, he’s the one who stands out, after logging 63 hits in only 26 games last season.

Still, neither player can replace what Cirelli brings to Tampa Bay’s top end. He has five points in nine games this season.

Last year was his second 50-point season, though he finished seven points shy of the career-high 59 he posted in the 2024-25 season. Since 2019, he has averaged 18 minutes of ice time and has been on pace for 66 shot blocks and 68 hits per 82 games.

For now, the Lightning are facing a second-line center problem with Cirelli unavailable.

Lightning Fans Just Got A Dylan Larkin Trade What-If

A fresh layer of intrigue has been added to the Dylan Larkin buzz, and Tampa Bay is now part of the conversation. According to a report from The Athletic, the Detroit Red Wings center has broadened the list of NHL teams he would consider, putting the Lightning in the mix as a possible landing spot if the situation ever moved from speculation to something more concrete.

For a Tampa Bay team that is always looking to stay in the contender lane, the fit is easy to imagine on paper. Larkin would bring another high-end center option into the picture, but any real pursuit would come with the usual complications of a player with his stature and market value, leaving plenty of questions about how realistic a move like this could actually be.
