TAMPA BAY - The Tampa Bay Lightning have made a strategic move by acquiring defenseman Ian Mitchell from the Detroit Red Wings. In exchange, forwards Michael Milne and Wojciech Stachowiak are heading to Detroit, as announced by Vice President and General Manager Julien BriseBois. Mitchell is set to join the Syracuse Crunch in the American Hockey League (AHL).
Mitchell, at 27, has been a standout in the AHL this season with the Grand Rapids Griffins. Over 45 games, he's tallied four goals and 20 points, boasting an impressive plus-27 rating.
Standing at 6 feet and weighing 195 pounds, Mitchell has built a solid AHL career with 201 games under his belt. His record includes 27 goals, 113 points, a plus-51 rating, and 10 game-winning goals across stints with the Griffins, Providence Bruins, and Rockford IceHogs.
Hailing from St. Albert, Alberta, Mitchell has also made his mark in the NHL.
He's played 110 games for the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks, contributing four goals and 19 points while averaging 15:10 of ice time per game. Originally drafted by Chicago in the second round, 57th overall, in the 2017 NHL Draft, Mitchell brings valuable experience and skill to Tampa Bay's roster.
This move underscores the Lightning's commitment to strengthening their defensive depth, and Mitchell's blend of AHL success and NHL experience makes him a promising addition to the organization. Fans will be eager to see how his presence impacts the team's dynamics as they push forward in the season.
