Kucherov To Detroit Rumor Would Force A Massive Lightning Decision

As trade talks between Tampa Bay and Detroit intensify, General Manager Shawn Horcoff faces a make-or-break decision with the potential Kucherov-Larkin swap.

A Nikita Kucherov-to-Detroit idea is out there, and if it ever turns into something real, Dylan Larkin would be the name going back the other way.

That’s the framework Elliotte Friedman raised on the latest 32 Thoughts podcast, and the logic is built almost entirely on hockey fit. The Red Wings are looking to move Larkin, but they want a strong player in return.

Tampa Bay, for its part, does not want to move Kucherov at all. Still, if the Lightning were forced into that kind of deal, they’d want a quality player coming back on a manageable contract.

Detroit has the cap room to make it work and could give Kucherov the $20 million per season he’s asking for going forward.

It’s the sort of swap that only makes sense if both sides are willing, and if the players are on board.

Friedman laid out the Detroit angle this way: “Like someone said to me the other day that he could actually see from pure hockey point of view, he could see a Larkin for Kucherov. Because he said if you look at Detroit, you could have [Lucas] Raymond on one side taking the one-timers, and you could have [Moritz] Seider with a shot at the point like [Darren] Raddysh did.

Right? And he thinks that that’s the way that Kucherov will think.

Kucherov has already said he wants to play with smart hockey players, and Emily Kaplan of ESPN reported there’s talk he’d like to line up with another superstar. It’s not clear whether he sees Detroit that way, but he does have a list of 10 teams he’d be willing to join. That list should become public soon enough.

For the Red Wings, this would be a massive bet, and interim GM Shawn Horcoff would be the one carrying it. A Kucherov trade could be the move that lands him the permanent GM job - or the one that gets him fired if Kucherov doesn’t sign an extension.

Right now, Horcoff is still trying to maximize his options. He’s moving slowly on a Larkin trade and on an extension for Simon Edvisson, and it’s not clear how much authority he actually has to make these calls. Whether that’s caution or uncertainty, the next big decision could be the biggest one of all.

Trading Larkin for Kucherov would be a full-throttle swing. It could turn into a major win, or it could blow up in a hurry.

Kucherov Just Made Tampa Bays Biggest Problem Even Harder To Ignore

Nikita Kucherovs trade request has turned into one of the more uncomfortable storylines around the Lightning, and now the star winger has finally spoken publicly about why it happened. He made clear the issue was not money, but the way things had been handled, pointing to poor communication and a lack of respect as the reasons the request was made. For a team built around long-term relationships and continuity, that kind of rift is hard to ignore.

Kucherov also said he and general manager Julien BriseBois had only two conversations over the past four months, a detail that only sharpens the sense of distance between player and front office. He added that BriseBois told him he would be free to leave as an unrestricted free agent on July 1, even as Kucherov stressed that he remains committed to Tampa Bay for this season and appreciative of the organization. The season goes on, but the larger issue hanging over the Lightning clearly is not going away anytime soon. [Read more 🡒]

There are already other moving pieces in the mix, with Detroits Simon Edvinsson and Dylan Larkin both part of active trade conversations and multiple teams said to be interested across the board. For Tampa Bay, the bigger issue is not just the noise around Kucherov, but what happens if the situation keeps stretching toward the deadline without a resolution, leaving the Lightning to navigate a storyline that could shape their roster plans for the final stretch.
