The Buccaneers have locked in Baker Mayfield for the long haul, and they’ve done it in a way that says plenty about how Tampa Bay views its quarterback. The team announced a four-year contract extension that runs through the 2029 season, making Mayfield the highest-paid player in franchise history.
Since arriving in 2023, Mayfield has changed the feel of the organization, and the numbers back it up. Across three seasons, he ranks third in the NFL with 12,237 passing yards and second with 95 passing touchdowns. He’s also completed 66.3 percent of his passes and posted a 97.4 passer rating in 51 starts.
Owner and Co-Chairman Joel Glazer pointed to the impact Mayfield has made on and off the field. He said Mayfield’s arrival “marked an important new chapter for our organization.”
Glazer also called him “the unquestioned leader of our franchise,” while praising his competitive edge, resilience and commitment to winning. He added that he and his wife Emily have become a meaningful part of the community and said the organization is “thrilled their family will continue to call Tampa Bay home for years to come.”
That leadership has shown up in the standings. Mayfield has helped guide Tampa Bay to two NFC South titles, a postseason win and two Pro Bowl selections. He also owns single-season franchise records for completion percentage and passer rating, and he’s the only quarterback in team history with multiple Pro Bowl nods.
General Manager Jason Licht described Mayfield as “the heartbeat of this team.” Licht said his toughness and his ability to come through in big moments matter, but stressed that it’s the day-to-day leadership that makes him so valuable.
Head Coach Todd Bowles backed that up, saying Mayfield’s energy and confidence lift the entire locker room. “His belief in himself and this team never wavers,” Bowles said, adding that Mayfield sets the tone every day.
Mayfield’s 2024 season was the best of his career. He threw for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns while completing more than 70 percent of his passes. That made him just the fourth player in NFL history to post 4,000 passing yards, 40 touchdowns and a 70-percent completion rate in a single season.
His influence extends beyond football, too. Through the Baker and Emily Mayfield Foundation, the couple has raised more than $600,000 for early learning programs in Hillsborough County and backed several community initiatives across Tampa Bay.
