Corey Perry Boosts Lightning's Chances Amid Eastern Conference Shake-Up

Veteran forward Corey Perry returns to the Tampa Bay Lightning, bringing his playoff prowess and optimism as the team sets its sights on reclaiming their Eastern Conference dominance and making a deep Stanley Cup run.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have been a powerhouse in the Eastern Conference, but recently, they've been outpaced by the surging Buffalo Sabres. In a strategic move to bolster their lineup for a deep playoff push, the Lightning brought back a familiar face-veteran forward Corey Perry.

At the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline, Tampa Bay reacquired Perry from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2028 NHL Draft. Perry, who previously played with the Lightning from 2021 to 2023, is no stranger to the team's culture and aspirations. His past tenure included a trip to the Stanley Cup Final and a memorable series against the Colorado Avalanche.

Perry expressed his excitement about returning, stating, “It was a lot of back and forth, a lot of discussion with family, and eventually we made the decision. Happy to be here.

Exciting. At the end of the day, we have a chance to win a Stanley Cup here.

That's the goal.”

Perry's playoff pedigree is well-documented. A Stanley Cup champion with the Anaheim Ducks 19 seasons ago, he has consistently delivered in the postseason.

During his previous stint with the Lightning, Perry notched eight goals and eight assists in playoff action. His recent playoff runs with the Edmonton Oilers showcased his clutch performance, tallying 10 goals last spring alone.

The Lightning are banking on Perry's experience and knack for stepping up in crucial moments. With key players like Nikita Kucherov, Andrei Vasilevskiy, and Brayden Point still in the fold, Perry's return is expected to seamlessly integrate into the team's dynamic.

Upon learning of the trade, Perry received a warm welcome from his former teammates, highlighting the camaraderie and chemistry he shares with the group. “There were a lot of guys who I played with in that room who reached out right away,” Perry shared.

“The phone blew up … It was a long day yesterday with the delay, late flight, getting in late. Exciting to be here though.”

Despite facing setbacks in recent Stanley Cup Finals, Perry remains optimistic. Reflecting on his journey, he said, “I’ve just been fortunate to be on some good teams and go on some good runs. It’s been disappointing, five of the last six years, but we’ll try to right that ship.”

In his season debut with the Lightning, Perry found the back of the net against the Toronto Maple Leafs, adding to his tally of 13 goals and 18 assists this season. As the Lightning gear up for another playoff run, Perry's veteran presence and playoff savvy could be the key to unlocking another championship journey.
