Connor McDavid didn't hold back during his postgame chat on Saturday night following the Oilers' 5-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. He gave credit where it was due, praising Jon Cooper and the Lightning for their impressive team play and structure.
However, his comments seemed to hint at some dissatisfaction with his own team, particularly head coach Kris Knoblauch, sparking a flurry of discussion in the hockey community. The Oilers have been on a rocky road this season, struggling to find their rhythm.
Fast forward to Monday, McDavid addressed the media again, clarifying that his previous remarks were not meant to criticize. He emphasized that everyone, including himself, needs to step up as the season progresses.
“We’re not taking shots. It’s just everybody can be better, myself included.
Everybody can be better. It was more just complementary of a great team in this league that came in and played a good game.
Nothing more than that… Not sure how it was taken that way, it wasn’t supposed to be that way. But I understand, obviously, I understand how people could look at it that way, but it’s not what I was intending to do at all,” McDavid explained.
At 29, McDavid is having another stellar season, racking up 116 points with 38 goals and 78 assists over 71 games. He trails only Nikita Kucherov in the scoring race, who sits at 119 points.
During practice, McDavid left the ice early, causing a stir among fans. He later assured everyone that it was just a scheduled maintenance day and nothing to worry about.
The pressure cooker is heating up in Edmonton. The Oilers are feeling the strain as they struggle to find consistency in the tightly contested Pacific Division. While a playoff spot seems likely, McDavid knows that improvement is needed across the board-from players to coaches-if the team hopes to make a significant impact in the postseason.
