Yankees Make Major ALDS Announcement

The Yankees gear up for a high-stakes ALDS showdown against the Rays, with strategic pitching decisions set to play a crucial role.

The Yankees and Rays are back in the postseason, and this time the setup looks a lot less surreal than their last October meeting. Their first playoff series came in San Diego with cardboard cutouts in the stands. This one starts Saturday at The Trop, which is somehow the first postseason game the Yankees have ever played there.

The schedule brings a strange twist right away. There’s an off day between Games 1 and 2 without any change in venue, a quirk that could let both clubs line up their Game 1 starters again on full rest for Game 4 if they want to go that route.

New York is going with Gerrit Cole in the opener.

That choice doesn’t exactly follow the numbers on paper. The Rays have handled right-handed pitching well this season, posting the fourth-best wRC+ and fifth-best OPS in baseball against righties.

Against lefties, though, they drop all the way to 26th and 25th in those same categories. Even so, the Yankees are clearly leaning into the simple version of the decision: Cole is their guy, and he gets the ball.

And it’s not hard to see why they’re comfortable with that call. Cole has the pedigree, and after two rough outings in San Diego and against the Mets, he finished the year strongly, including a solid start against the Rays at the Stadium. His regular-season ERA sits at 3.20, and his postseason ERA is 2.77.

That leaves the Yankees with another good problem: how to handle Carlos Rodón. The numbers suggested Rodón should have been the choice, and his recent track record would have supported that too.

But in a short series, the Yankees are trusting the arm they trust most. Rodón still figures to matter, whether that’s in Game 3 or Game 4 back in New York.

If Cole’s first start goes well, he could technically come back on regular rest and face Drew Rasmussen again in Game 4. That’s the kind of rotation flexibility the Yankees are working with here - not a scramble, but a luxury.

Buccaneers Ask Unproven Rookie To Survive Their Biggest Offensive Problem

The Buccaneers are asking a lot of a rookie at a difficult time, turning to Jalon Daniels against a Packers defense that will make life miserable if Tampa Bays protection issues show up again. The context is not subtle: the Buccaneers have spent the season at the top of the NFL in sacks allowed, and offensive coordinator Zac Robinson has already acknowledged how hard it has been to keep the quarterback upright, especially after Baker Mayfields injury changed the look of the offense.

Daniels now gets the kind of first start that can either accelerate a players growth or expose every flaw around him, and the Buccaneers are banking on the former. The team has expressed confidence in his poise and ability to handle pressure, but the matchup still leaves Tampa Bay balancing belief in a rookie with the reality of an offensive line that has not given its quarterbacks much margin for error. Buccaneers Suddenly Have A Quarterback Depth Issue To Solve

The Buccaneers added a familiar face behind Baker Mayfield this week, signing veteran quarterback Brett Rypien to the practice squad after Mayfield was injured. It is the kind of move that makes sense in a hurry, especially for a team trying to keep the quarterback room steady while the starter works his way back.

Rypiens tie to offensive coordinator Zac Robinson should help, since the two were together with the Rams in 2023 and already know the framework. For now, Tampa Bays healthy quarterback options also include Easton Stick and rookie Jalon Daniels, leaving the Bucs with a depth chart that suddenly has to hold together until Mayfield is ready again. Buccaneers Have 3 Matchups That Could Decide Their First Win

The Buccaneers head into their meeting with the Packers in a spot both familiar and frustrating: trying to shake off an 0-1 start and find an early-season foothold. For Tampa Bay, the game may come down to whether its defense can turn a few key one-on-one battles into enough disruption to tilt the afternoon its way, starting up front against a Green Bay offensive line that has already shown some shaky moments.

The bigger concern is keeping Green Bays playmakers from turning those protection issues into chunk gains. Tampa Bays cornerbacks will be tested by Christian Watson, while the linebackers and safeties have to stay disciplined against tight end Tucker Kraft, who can stress the middle of the field. If the Buccaneers can win those matchups, they give themselves a better path to their first victory, even if the margin for error is still thin. [Read more 🡒]
