Vita Vea Just Sent A Strong Message About Todd Bowles

Vita Vea's recent contract extension with the Buccaneers signals more than just a commitment to Tampa; it underscores his unwavering praise for Head Coach Todd Bowles, shedding light on the defensive powerhouse's loyalty and belief in the team's futu

The Buccaneers locked up one of their most important defensive pieces on Wednesday, and Vita Vea didn’t waste time making clear how he feels about where he’s playing - or who’s coaching him.

After signing a one-year, $30 million extension, the veteran defensive tackle said Tampa is exactly where he wants to be. He also delivered a loud endorsement of head coach Todd Bowles, brushing aside the idea that the defense’s issues last season were on the coach.

"He [Bowles] is always putting us into the best position to play…If anything, blame us players for not executing," Vea said. "Bowles puts us into the best position to play. I even told Bowles, ‘the day you retire is the day I retire.’"

Vea went even further, saying Bowles gives the players "all the answers to the test."

That kind of support matters, especially with Bowles’ job security a talking point heading into the season. Vea didn’t sound interested in feeding that conversation. Instead, he backed his coach and made it plain that he never wanted out of Tampa in the first place.

"I didn’t want to leave that behind, switch teams, get traded," Vea said. "That was never the plan for me."

The extension also shuts down the trade noise that had followed Vea after he requested a deal in late July. The Bucs had made it clear they wanted to find common ground with him, and they did just that.

Keeping Vea is a big win for a front office that has already dealt with some major departures. Franchise pillars Lavonte David and Mike Evans are gone in free agency, and while Tampa has added and drafted at linebacker and wide receiver, those are the kind of losses that take time to absorb.

Vea acknowledged that replacing David’s presence on the defensive side will be "tough," but he also made sure to give the veteran linebacker his due.

“I wish he got more praise than he did," Vea said. "I feel like a lot of people slept on him. We knew his work over here.”

Now one of the longest-tenured players on the roster, Vea will be counted on for more than just production. He’ll need to help carry the leadership load as the Bucs try to get back to defensive prominence.

On the field, the résumé remains strong. Last season, Vea posted 4.5 sacks, 34 tackles, a fumble recovery and two passes defensed. It was his fourth straight year with at least 4.5 sacks, and he has piled up 23.5 over the last four seasons.

He’s also been remarkably reliable, playing in 13 or more games in every season of his career except one.

And before this new deal, Vea was earning less than $18 million per year, a number that placed him in the bottom half of interior defensive linemen.

Baker Mayfields Preseason Debut Comes With One Troubling Bucs Question

Baker Mayfield is set for his first preseason snaps of 2024 when the Buccaneers host the Chiefs, giving Tampa Bay a chance to get its starting quarterback into game speed before the real pressure starts. The bigger storyline, though, is on the edge of the line, where Tristan Wirfs is unlikely to go because of a hamstring injury, leaving the team to sort through its left tackle options on the fly.

Justin Skule and Benjamin Chukwuma are both in the mix to fill that spot, but their availability has been uncertain after recent practice absences, which complicates the picture even more. With that kind of instability protecting Mayfields blind side, Tampa Bay may choose to keep his preseason workload short and limit the exposure rather than risk a costly hit in August. [Read more 🡒]

Vita Vea Just Sent A Clear Message About Todd Bowles

The Buccaneers locked up Vita Vea with a contract extension, keeping one of the most important pieces of the interior defensive line in place as the team continues to shape its identity under Todd Bowles. It also gave Vea a chance to speak with the kind of authority that comes from being a franchise cornerstone, and he did not waste it when the conversation turned to the coach.

Amid the criticism that followed Tampa Bays late-season slide in 2025, Vea came to Bowles defense and said the staff had the team prepared. He made clear the issue, in his view, was not the game plan but the way the Buccaneers executed it on the field, a public show of support that says plenty about where at least one veteran stands as the organization sorts through the fallout. Ryan Fitzgerald Faces The Pressure Panthers Fans Will Be Watching

Vita Vea was back on the Buccaneers injury report Thursday as he continued working through a back issue, a reminder that Tampa Bay still has a few moving parts to sort out before the real ramp-up begins. The veteran defensive tackle is expected back next week for the joint practices in Jacksonville, and he has also made it clear he wants to stay in Tampa Bay while standing firmly behind head coach Todd Bowles.

Across the division, Panthers kicker Ryan Fitzgerald is dealing with a different kind of test. He is not battling for the starting job, but he is still battling the pressure that comes with being the one everyone watches, and special teams coordinator has pointed to Fitzgeralds growth and preparation this offseason. For Tampa Bay, it is one more familiar NFC South subplot to keep an eye on, especially when a specialists confidence can become part of the bigger picture. [Read more 🡒]
