Tomlin Just Twisted The Knife On Dallas After Bucs Exposed Them

Mike Tomlin questions the Cowboys' recent efforts to revamp their struggling defense ahead of a critical matchup with the Packers.

The Cowboys are already searching for fixes after a Week 5 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and their defense is right back at the center of the problem.

Dallas entered the season with plenty of optimism that the unit would improve after finishing in the bottom five in most defensive categories in 2025, including yards allowed per game and points allowed per game. Instead, the early returns have only deepened the concern. Through five weeks, the Cowboys have allowed the second-most yards per game in the NFL, with only the Detroit Lions giving up more.

That rocky start has reportedly pushed Cowboys defensive leaders into a players-only meeting, an attempt to sort through the issues before they spiral further. But former NFL head coach Mike Tomlin doesn’t view that kind of meeting as a cure. He sees it as a warning sign.

Appearing on the latest episode of the "New Heights" podcast, hosted by Travis Kelce and Jason Kelce, Tomlin was asked what he thinks about players-only meetings. He didn’t soften his answer.

"I think you are dead," said Tomlin when asked by Jason Kelce about players-only meetings. "Dudes that have been around me know that I have nothing but respect for player leadership.

I embrace that, and all that stuff. But when you are having players only meetings, it doesn't go good.

I will tell you that. If it did occur, I would like to not hear about it.

The fact that you hear about it is what makes it B.S. If it was authentic and real, it wouldn't be reported.

I am not a fan."

Tomlin’s point was clear: in his eyes, the mere fact that the meeting is getting out suggests it’s more about appearance than actual problem-solving. And beyond the Cowboys specifically, he sounded skeptical of players-only meetings as a general fix.

However the Cowboys handle it, the defense needs a response fast if the team is going to get closer to its ceiling. That next chance comes in Week 6, when Dallas heads on the road to face the Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football on NBC.

Buccaneers Just Sent A Loud Message About Their National Pull

The Buccaneers Thursday night matchup with the Cowboys did more than give Tampa Bay a national showcase. It helped underline how far the team has come in terms of national draw, with the game landing in a premium slot on Prime Video and feeding into a broader surge for the streaming package around Thursday Night Football.

Prime Videos early TNF numbers have been strong across the board, and the platform has seen its pregame and postgame coverage pick up, too. For the Buccaneers, that matters because games like this do not just shape the immediate conversation around the team, they also keep putting Tampa Bay in front of a bigger audience at a time when the leagues media landscape is shifting fast. Buccaneers Finally Have Hope But One Concern Still Looms

A Week 5 upset of the Dallas Cowboys gave Tampa Bay its first win of the season and, at least for the moment, some breathing room around a slow start. The result also nudged the Buccaneers up in ESPNs NFL power rankings, a small but welcome sign that the season is not already slipping away.

The bigger question is still on the defensive side, where the Bucs have looked uneven from drive to drive. There have been some standout individual efforts, but the pass rush and linebacker play remain inconsistent enough to keep the unit from settling in, and that leaves one familiar concern hanging over a team trying to build on its first breakthrough. Chris Godwin Just Fueled Growing Bucs Optimism Around Jalon Daniels

When Baker Mayfield went down, the Buccaneers turned to undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels, and the offense at least found enough stability to grab its first win of the season in Week 5. For a team trying to stay in the NFC South race, that mattered almost as much as the result itself, because Tampa Bay suddenly has a quarterback situation that feels less like a crisis and more like a chance to keep building.

Chris Godwin has become one of the louder believers in Daniels, praising the rookies poise and the way he carries himself in the huddle. The veteran receiver also pointed to Daniels charisma and the kind of positive energy that can spread quickly through a locker room, a promising sign for a Buccaneers team staring at a stretch of games it can realistically use to climb right back into contention.
