Todd Bowles Compares New Bucs To Departed Stars

Todd Bowles outlines the Buccaneers' strategic shift with new talent meant to uplift the team after last season's challenges.

In a shift from their usual strategy, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have embraced a new approach this offseason. Traditionally known for re-signing their own players, the Bucs have opted to bring in fresh faces to invigorate the team following a lackluster 8-9 season. Head coach Todd Bowles shed light on this change in philosophy during the NFL Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona.

While the Bucs did re-sign key players like starting tight end Cade Otton, along with backup offensive lineman Dan Feeney, reserve running back Sean Tucker, and backup tight end Ko Kieft, the emphasis was clearly on new acquisitions. These newcomers are expected to inject a new attitude and playing style, aiming to elevate the team's performance.

Bowles highlighted two significant additions: defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson and running back Kenneth Gainwell. Robinson steps in to replace Logan Hall, bringing a toughness and sturdiness that Bowles believes will bolster the defensive line.

“If you stay the same, sometimes you get the same results,” Bowles remarked, emphasizing the need for change. He noted that while Hall is more athletic, Robinson's physicality is a key asset.

On the offensive side, Gainwell joins the backfield, taking over for Rachaad White. Bowles praised Gainwell's versatility, highlighting his skills in running, catching, blocking, and contributing to special teams. This multifaceted ability is seen as a significant upgrade, especially given White's departure, which was partly due to his feeling overshadowed by Bucky Irving.

Gainwell's explosiveness is expected to complement Irving, who remains the primary back. “Bucky’s No. 1 and obviously Kenneth is 1B,” Bowles explained, envisioning a dynamic duo that can keep defenses on their toes.

Robinson's gritty mentality and Gainwell's electrifying presence are set to redefine the Buccaneers' approach, both on the defensive line and in the backfield. With these strategic changes, the Bucs are poised to tackle the upcoming season with renewed vigor and determination.
