The Buccaneers explored the possibility of adding a high-profile name to Todd Bowles’ evolving coaching staff-but that door’s closing, at least for now.
Tampa Bay had conversations with former Bills head coach Sean McDermott about a potential role for 2026, according to a report Wednesday. But McDermott is expected to sit out the upcoming season, opting to take a step back from coaching before reassessing his future in 2027.
That aligns with earlier reports suggesting McDermott initially considered jumping right back into coaching after his dismissal from Buffalo, but ultimately decided to take a breather. After seven seasons leading the Bills-including multiple playoff runs and a trip to the AFC Championship Game-he’s earned the right to hit pause and recalibrate.
There is some history between McDermott and Bucs general manager Jason Licht. The two overlapped in Philadelphia from 2003 to 2007-Licht in the front office, McDermott working under Andy Reid on the Eagles’ coaching staff. So there’s a foundation of familiarity there, which likely played a role in Tampa Bay’s interest.
The Bucs are in the middle of a significant coaching reset. After finishing 8-9 in 2025 and falling short of the playoffs-despite a Week 18 win over Carolina-Bowles is reshaping his staff. Tampa has already brought in new offensive and special teams coordinators, and several defensive coaches from last year’s group won’t be returning.
Adding a defensive mind like McDermott, who built top-tier units in Buffalo and has deep playoff experience, would’ve been a strong move. But it looks like Tampa will have to look elsewhere as they retool for 2026.
As for McDermott, don’t be surprised if he’s one of the most sought-after names on the coaching market next offseason. With his track record, leadership style, and defensive acumen, he’s likely to be at the top of several teams’ wish lists come 2027.
