Rueben Bain Jr. arrived in Tampa Bay with all the buzz a rookie can carry, but two games into his NFL career, the Buccaneers still haven’t seen the impact they expected from their prized first-round pick.
Bain, the 15th pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, came into the season with a wave of hype after turning heads all offseason in practices. He was praised for his football IQ, drew comparisons to NFL great James Harrison, and even prompted Bucs legend Lavonte David, who retired in March, to say he wished he had one chance to play alongside him.
The opener looked like a soft landing spot. Tampa Bay faced the Cincinnati Bengals, whose offensive line has been a problem for years, and Bain had a chance to announce himself right away. Instead, he managed just one tackle and never got close to Joe Burrow.
That quiet debut was enough to fuel the criticism, with old pre-draft concerns about his arm length suddenly back in the conversation. Still, it was only one game, and Week 2 against the Cleveland Browns looked like the perfect chance to answer back. Cleveland had given up five sacks in Week 1 and entered as one of the league’s worst-looking teams.
Instead, Bain disappeared again.
The Buccaneers dropped a 23-19 upset at home, and Bain finished with zero tackles and no pressure on Browns tackles Spencer Fano and Tytus Howard. Fano went ninth overall, six spots ahead of Bain, and Bain had the chance to make Cleveland regret passing on him. The Browns, though, walked away looking smart.
There were bright spots for Tampa Bay elsewhere. David Walker, back after missing his entire rookie season with a torn ACL, recorded his first career sack against Deshaun Watson. Fourth-round rookie cornerback Keionte Scott also picked up his first sack.
Bain, meanwhile, stayed off the stat sheet entirely.
Two games do not define a career, especially for a rookie. But this is not the same player Tampa Bay saw in OTAs, training camp, and joint practices. And with the Buccaneers starting 0-2, his slow start has become part of a much bigger problem.
Losing in Cincinnati can be explained away. Losing at home to Cleveland cannot.
Tampa Bay already needed a better start after last season’s 2-7 collapse down the stretch. Instead, the Bucs are off to a rougher opening than anyone wanted, Baker Mayfield hasn’t played like a quarterback worth the three-year, $165 million extension he signed right before the season, and Todd Bowles is heading into a very loud stretch of criticism. He was already on the hot seat, and now it’s only getting hotter.
Bowles is supposed to be a defensive wizard. So far, he hasn’t gotten much of anything out of his most hyped rookie, and that is going to be under the microscope. Things are very bad in Tampa, and Bain’s quiet start is only part of the story.
