The Buccaneers’ 0-2 start has done more than show up in the standings. It’s changed the mood around the building, and Hall of Famer Ronde Barber didn’t sugarcoat it this week.
Barber, speaking on his WFLA show, said the atmosphere around Tampa Bay right now is far from where it needs to be after the team’s 23-19 loss to the Browns in the home opener.
“ Look, the mood is not great,” Barber said on his WFLA show. ”There’s too many mistakes.
There’s a lack of urgency, if you will, in my mind when I look at them going onto the field. There’s got to be a little bit of a sense of a defining characteristic of your team through Week 2.
I don’t know what that is. It’s mistakes.
It’s busts. It’s lack of execution.”
For Barber, the bigger issue is that the Bucs don’t look like a team that has found its footing yet. In his view, they’ve still been operating like it’s the preseason.
“Week 2 can’t be the fifth preseason game,” Barber said. “At some point you have to start hitting your stride. And it doesn’t feel like they’re in their stride right now on either side of the ball.”
He also pointed to problems in the secondary, especially in coverage, saying the unit appears overloaded by what it’s being asked to do.
“I feel like for much of the secondary, especially the coverage unit, they’re so focused on what they’re trying to do that they don’t know how to do it now.”
Barber didn’t stop there. He also brought up former Lions linebacker Alex Anzalone, who signed with the Bucs as a free agent, and said something about the defensive fit is still off.
“There’s some dynamic going on, whether it’s not understanding what his role is in the defense, not understanding angles, maybe not having enough tackles in the preseason, I don’t know what it is,” Barber said. ”Something is hamstringing this defense in critical moments.”
The timing matters, too. Tampa Bay is now heading into Week 3 as the second of three straight home games, and the pressure is only rising.
Last week’s official attendance was 61,391, nearly 8,000 short of capacity. And by the end of the game, after a long weather delay, the fans who stayed were already letting their frustration show.
If the Bucs fall to 0-3, the reaction at the next home game figures to be even sharper.
That’s part of what makes this week such a tricky spot for the Vikings, who have opened 2-0 after exceeding expectations. It’s the kind of matchup where the team that has been better than projected can walk straight into trouble against the team that has been worse than expected.
