Mike Evans Is Bringing Back A Familiar Concern For Bucs Fans

The San Francisco 49ers' championship hopes may hinge on whether Mike Evans can overcome the familiar injury concerns that followed him from his Tampa Bay Buccaneers days.

Mike Evans’ move from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the San Francisco 49ers came with big expectations, and early on he’s lived up to them. After 12 seasons in Tampa Bay, Evans chose to leave for less money in free agency, believing the change would help both his own play and his pursuit of a Super Bowl late in his career.

The start in San Francisco has been exactly what the 49ers hoped for. Evans has been a standout in OTAs and training camp, drawing strong praise from teammates and coaches. But that momentum took a hit when he missed Monday’s practice because of a quad tweak, and that’s where an old concern starts creeping back into the picture.

For the Buccaneers, Evans’ soft tissue issues were a familiar frustration over the years. He wasn’t an injury-prone player in the broad sense, and the numbers back that up: in 12 seasons, he missed just 15 regular-season games, with 10 of those coming last season after he fractured his clavicle and needed surgery early in the year. Still, even when he was available, those nagging injuries sometimes limited him, forced him out of games early, or left him playing through pain.

That history matters even more now that Evans is entering his age-33 season. Players at his position often start to wear down in their 30s, and bigger receivers can be especially vulnerable. Julio Jones, who is similar in size, began dealing with recurring hamstring problems in his early 30s and eventually missed significant time late in his career.

Evans remains the clear top wideout on the 49ers roster, and if he stays on the field, he has the chance to put together a huge season. But that’s the catch. His quad issue is a reminder that San Francisco may have to manage the same soft tissue concerns Tampa Bay knew well for years if it wants Evans healthy enough to be the centerpiece they need.

Baker Mayfield Gets A Big National Test In Bucs Spotlight

Baker Mayfield is about to get another big stage, and this one comes with a familiar college connection and plenty of national attention. When the Buccaneers host the Chicago Bears on Nov. 8 for Sunday Night Football, Mayfield will be lined up across from Caleb Williams, the former Oklahoma star who has quickly become one of the NFLs most-watched young quarterbacks.

It gives Tampa Bay a chance to measure itself against a Chicago team that looks far different than it did a year ago, with Williams showing progress in his third NFL season and helping push the Bears into the playoffs last year. For Mayfield, it is the kind of spotlight game that always seems to follow a quarterback who was once the top pick, and it adds another notable chapter to a career that has already included a stop with the Browns before landing in Tampa Bay. Buccaneers Camp Battles Are Already Turning Up Heat On Fringe Roster Spots

Training camp is barely underway, but the Buccaneers are already getting a clearer picture of who is making the first impression and who is trying to keep up. At wide receiver, Tez Johnson and Ted Hurst have shown enough early promise to get attention in a crowded room, while David Walker has also made a positive start as the team begins sorting out the bottom of the roster.

The heat is showing up elsewhere too, especially at cornerback and backup quarterback, where every rep can carry extra weight. Ben Morrison has been slowed by injury, Josh Hayes has had a tougher time in coverage, and Jake Browning is among the players trying to push into the conversation as the competition tightens before the preseason really starts to sort things out.
