Jaguars' Liam Coen Predicts Big Year for Bucs' Baker Mayfield and Zac Robinson
When it comes to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson, Jaguars head coach Liam Coen is all in. Coen, who previously worked as the Bucs' offensive coordinator, believes Robinson and quarterback Baker Mayfield are poised for a standout season in 2026.
Coen and Robinson share a history that dates back to their time together under Sean McVay with the Los Angeles Rams. Back in 2022, Coen was the Rams' offensive coordinator while Robinson served as the quarterbacks coach. During that stint, they worked closely with Mayfield, who joined the Rams late in the season.
Reflecting on Robinson's new role in Tampa Bay, Coen shared his thoughts after a recent golf outing with Robinson in Jacksonville. "Zac's a former quarterback from Oklahoma State," Coen noted.
"He understands the game from the inside out. His approach is aggressive, and he's all about putting points on the board, whether it's through the air or on the ground.
He knows how to maximize the strengths of his players."
Robinson's background as a quarterback himself could be a game-changer for Mayfield, who thrived under Coen's system in 2024. That year, the Bucs boasted a top-five scoring offense, with Mayfield throwing for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns, and achieving a franchise-record 71.4% completion rate.
Having spent time in Atlanta, Robinson honed his skills with players like Bijan Robinson and Drake London. He also navigated a quarterback transition from Kirk Cousins to Michael Penix Jr., showcasing his adaptability and strategic acumen. Coen believes Robinson's experience with diverse offensive talents will translate well to the Bucs, even with Mike Evans now in San Francisco.
Coen praised Robinson's ability to utilize wideouts effectively, citing his success with players like Darnell Mooney and London. "He knows how to get receivers open and create efficient game plans," Coen said.
"Tampa's got a talented wideout room and a strong offensive line, plus they've re-signed Cade Otton. Zac's got a lot to work with."
Coen also highlighted Robinson's calm demeanor, which could benefit Mayfield, known for his fiery personality. "Zac's calm and collected, maybe a bit more laid-back than I am," Coen explained. "That balance can be great for Baker, especially as he looks to bounce back this season."
Mayfield's numbers dipped last year under first-year play-caller Josh Grizzard, but Coen is optimistic that Robinson's system will rejuvenate the veteran quarterback. With a contract year ahead, Mayfield is motivated to return to his 2024 form and lead the Bucs back to the playoffs.
Coen is confident in the Robinson-Mayfield partnership, saying, "Their prior relationship helps. Baker's driven to win, and with Zac's guidance, I believe they'll get back to where they want to be."
