As the 2026 NFL offseason kicks into gear, Lavonte David, the stalwart linebacker and cornerstone of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense, is at a significant juncture in his illustrious career. After 14 seasons donning the Buccaneers' colors, David is contemplating whether to continue his gridiron journey or hang up his cleats. In a recent chat on the Caps Off podcast, David opened up about his current mindset.
At 36, David still feels physically robust and mentally committed to the sport, but the decision to retire is anything but straightforward. "I feel good," he shared.
"I’m healthy. I’m happy.
I’m undecided [on retiring] … I still got a lot of football left in me. I know that for sure.
I still love the game."
The Buccaneers have kept the lines of communication open with their defensive leader, signaling that they would gladly welcome him back if he chooses to play in 2026. David has made it clear that it's either the Buccaneers or nothing; the thought of wearing another team's jersey just doesn't sit right with him.
This openness from the team suggests they believe a fully recovered David, who played through a knee injury throughout the 2025 season, still has much to contribute. Despite any doubts from some fans, David’s performance, including outpacing Jayden Daniels to the sideline in their 2024 playoff clash and leading the linebacker corps last season, speaks volumes.
A farewell tour for Lavonte David, where he vies for one last championship while mentoring his successor, could very well be in the cards.
