Lavonte David Keeps Buccaneers Guessing About 2026 Season Return

Buccaneers fans anxiously await Lavonte David's decision on his future, as the veteran linebacker weighs the possibility of a 15th season amid team support and a potential successor looming.

Lavonte David has been a cornerstone of the NFL for 14 seasons, carving out a legacy as one of the top inside linebackers in the game. As we edge closer to the NFL draft and navigate the free agency waters, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are still in the dark about David's plans for Year 15.

Buccaneers' GM Jason Licht shared that the 36-year-old hasn't yet decided on returning for the upcoming season. The Bucs are giving David all the time he needs, staying in close contact, as ESPN’s Jenna Laine reported.

Licht emphasized that David’s situation is unique, with the team's ownership backing this patient approach. The door remains open for David, potentially up until training camp, and his decision is solely his own.

This means that Mike Evans' recent move to the San Francisco 49ers won't sway David's choice.

On the Caps Off podcast, David hinted at having more football in him, but the final call is still pending. Despite his age, David's performance hasn't waned. In 2025, he led the Buccaneers with 114 tackles, alongside 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and an interception.

Throughout his career, David has racked up 1,714 tackles, tying with Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks for the most in franchise history. Following offseason knee surgery, the Bucs might need to consider lining up a successor, regardless of David's decision.

Tampa Bay started strong in 2025 with a 6-2 record but ended up 8-9. Meanwhile, David’s camp has been quiet, and the Bucs have shown interest in Georgia Bulldogs standout linebacker CJ Allen in the draft.

Ultimately, as Licht noted, the decision rests with David-a testament to his invaluable contribution to the franchise.
