Lavonte David Granted Time by Buccaneers to Decide Future Plans

The Buccaneers are prioritizing respect and patience as they await Lavonte David's decision on his future, underscoring his invaluable legacy and leadership.

Lavonte David's Legacy and Future: A Buccaneers' Perspective

Lavonte David has etched his name into Tampa Bay Buccaneers lore as one of the franchise's all-time greats. At 36, while he may not be at his peak, his performance remains impressive, leaving fans and the team wondering about his next move. Was the 2025 season his swan song, or does he have more to give?

David's future in the NFL remains uncertain, but the Buccaneers' management is handling the situation with the utmost respect. General Manager Jason Licht is giving David the space and time he needs to decide his path forward.

“You know how I feel and we feel,” Licht expressed at the scouting combine in Indianapolis. “He embodies everything we value in a player and a person.

He’s earned the right to take his time and decide his future. We’re honoring that.”

Head coach Todd Bowles echoed Licht’s sentiments, highlighting David's impact on the team. “Lavonte has been pivotal since I arrived,” Bowles shared.

“He’s been our green dot, our leader. He’s earned the right to decide if he wants to continue.

We hope he stays, but he knows our feelings.”

Drafted 58th overall in 2012, David’s career in Tampa Bay spans 14 seasons, including a Super Bowl LV victory. His accolades include a first-team All-Pro nod and two second-team selections.

With 1,716 tackles, 42.5 sacks, 33 forced fumbles, 21 recoveries, and 14 interceptions in 215 games, his contributions are undeniable. Notably, he hasn’t missed a game since 2023.

Regardless of David’s decision, the Buccaneers face a need at inside linebacker. SirVocea Dennis enters a contract year without much confidence from the team, and Nick Jackson, an undrafted free agent in 2025, is the only other linebacker signed for 2026.

The Buccaneers are patient, respecting David’s legacy and potential jersey retirement. The question remains: how long will the team wait for his decision on a 15th season?
