Jalon Daniels Just Gave The Bucs A New Quarterback Question

Jalon Daniels' outstanding preseason performance may have solidified his place on the Buccaneers' roster, following high praise from NFL analyst Greg Cosell.

Jalon Daniels didn’t waste any time making his case.

In Tampa Bay’s 24-16 preseason win over the New York Jets on Friday night, the Buccaneers quarterback delivered a debut that stood out immediately. He beat out Connor Bazelak on the field, moved the offense with his arm and legs, and finished with a touchdown run that sealed the game.

Daniels completed 10 of 15 passes for 111 yards and added three carries for nine yards, including a one-yard score in the fourth quarter. That final drive was a 16-play, 65-yard march, and Daniels’ plunge gave Tampa Bay a 24-16 lead. It also ended up as the last points of the night.

His best moments came in rhythm. Daniels picked up five yards on a third-and-4 scramble, then later hit Garrett Greene for a 35-yard gain on third-and-13 from the Tampa 28. He looked comfortable directing the offense and never appeared rattled.

That kind of showing lined up neatly with what Greg Cosell had already seen coming.

Back in April, the longtime NFL Films senior producer was already publicly high on Daniels before the 2026 NFL Draft.

"There's a quarterback I really like. I know he's not going to be drafted high.

He's not a day 1 starter in the NFL. We're talking Jalon Daniels from Kansas."

Cosell had studied plenty of tape on him and came away convinced there was real NFL starter potential there.

"He's got innate understanding and feel for playing from the pocket. Even though he's very athletic, this is not a guy that runs around.

He plays with poise and composure. Very good arm.

He can make every throw... He's one of those guys; it would not surprise me, two, three years down the road...if Jalon Daniels is a starting quarterback in the National Football League."

Given Cosell’s long run in the league - nearly 50 years in the NFL world - that kind of endorsement carries real weight.

And after Friday, Todd Bowles echoed the same theme when he praised Daniels. The head coach pointed to Daniels’ poise and confidence in the pocket, which is exactly the trait Cosell highlighted months ago.

For a young quarterback with Daniels’ athleticism, that matters. Too often, mobile passers lean on their legs before the play has fully developed.

Daniels didn’t do that. He worked through his progressions and stayed patient in the pocket, which only adds to his value.

Whether he develops into a starter in two or three years is still an open question. But with uncertainty still hanging over Baker Mayfield’s future in Tampa, Daniels already looks like the kind of quarterback worth keeping close.

He also appears to be making a strong push to stay on the roster. It may be difficult for the Buccaneers to leave him off the initial 53-man group, even if he remains behind Jake Browning in the QB2 race over the next month. And if Tampa Bay cuts him, there’s a real chance another team could claim him before he ever reaches the practice squad.

For now, one preseason game is all it took for Daniels to show the upside that has people around the league taking notice.

Ayden Garnes Is Giving Bucs Fans A Rookie Story To Love

Ayden Garnes has already given Buccaneers fans a preseason moment to remember, and it came from a player who arrived in Tampa Bay with plenty of reasons to be noticed. The undrafted rookie cornerback made a splash in the preseason opener with a 47-yard pick-six, the kind of play that can turn a camp battle into something much more interesting for a team sorting through the back end of its roster.

Garnes has been drawing attention for more than just his play on the field. Before his NFL career, he underwent a bone marrow donation procedure after being identified as a match during a collegiate drive at Duquesne University, a selfless act that potentially saved the life of a woman in her 20s. Now he is trying to turn that same blend of character and athleticism into a place on the Buccaneers roster, and he has given himself an early story worth following. [Read more 🡒]

Buccaneers Get A Tristan Wirfs Boost As Emeka Egbuka Sparks Concern

Tristan Wirfs finally got back on the field for the Buccaneers during their joint practice with the Jets, a welcome sight for an offense that has been waiting to see its Pro Bowl tackle ramp up for training camp. Backup quarterback Jake Browning also returned after missing a preseason game with a back strain, while linebacker Christian Rozeboom was sidelined, adding another layer to a practice day that already carried some lineup shuffling.

The concern moment came with Emeka Egbuka, who left early after a lower-body toe issue while working against New York. The rookies departure briefly changed the tone of the session, even if the injury is not viewed as a long-term problem, and Tampa Bay will be watching closely to see how he responds as camp moves forward. Bucs Defense Flashed As Tampa Bay Got A Crucial Camp Boost

The Buccaneers got a useful jolt at training camp practice as they continued preparing for their preseason matchup with Kansas City, and the defense made sure it was the group drawing attention. Jacob Parrish, David Walker and Yaya Diaby were among the standouts, with the unit stacking up pass breakups and sacks while showing the kind of activity Tampa Bay has been looking for as camp rolls on.

There was also a welcome sign on the injury front, with Tristan Wirfs, Benjamin Morrison and S JJ Roberts back on the practice field. The defensive highlights kept coming as the day went on, including takeaways that helped underline how sharp the group looked, even if there is still more to learn about how quickly that momentum can carry into game action.
