Jalon Daniels packed a lot into four days, and Thursday night in Dallas may have been the loudest statement yet.
After making his first NFL regular-season start on Sunday and throwing his first regular-season touchdown - a 10-yarder to Kenny Gainwell - the undrafted rookie out of Kansas came back on a short week and delivered his first win as an NFL starting quarterback. Tampa Bay knocked off the Cowboys 24-16 in Week 5, giving the Bucs their first victory of the 2026 season.
Daniels was at the center of it from start to finish. He finished 19-of-25 for 189 yards and a touchdown, protected the ball, and added 23 rushing yards while using his legs to move the chains on multiple third downs. Tampa Bay’s offense, meanwhile, finally found its best scoring output of the season, putting up 24 points after posting 20 in Week 1, 19 in Week 2, 16 in Week 3 and 14 in Week 4.
The night got even better for Daniels after the final whistle. He celebrated on the set of Amazon’s postgame show with his mother, Star, and the scene fit the moment.

That alone would have made for a memorable Thursday. But Daniels kept stacking milestones.
Tampa Bay’s first scoring drive answered Dallas right away, and it wasn’t just a response - it was a marathon. The Bucs went 15 plays, 73 yards and burned 10 minutes and 58 seconds before Daniels hit Bucky Irving for a 5-yard touchdown. It was Tampa Bay’s longest drive by elapsed time since 2007, and Daniels was nearly flawless on it, going 8-for-8 for 49 yards and the score while accounting for 60 total yards.
That opening stretch put Daniels in rare company. With those eight straight completions, he became the first undrafted rookie quarterback in the common draft era, which began in 1967, to open a game that way.
He also joined a very short list as one of only two undrafted rookie quarterbacks since 1991 to record a perfect completion percentage in a single quarter. The other was Matt McGloin, who did it for the Raiders against the Chiefs in 2013.
By the end of the night, Daniels had added even more to the ledger. He became just the fifth undrafted rookie quarterback in the common draft era to win a primetime game, and he was the first undrafted rookie starting quarterback to beat the Cowboys since Washington’s Ed Rubbert in 1987.
There was one more line on the resume, and for Daniels it had to mean something. He became the first University of Kansas quarterback to start and win an NFL game since Bobby Douglass in 1977.
Through two starts, Daniels is now 38-of-52 for 337 yards and two touchdowns, with 78 rushing yards to go with it. His Week 5 line followed Sunday’s 19-of-27 effort for 148 yards, a touchdown and 55 rushing yards.
That steady production across his first two starts put him into another notable spot. Per Opta, Daniels is the first quarterback since starts began being tracked in 1950 to complete at least 70% of his passes, throw a touchdown and rush for 20 or more yards in each of his first two NFL starts.
And beating Dallas on the road put him in a small Buccaneers club, too. Daniels became only the third Tampa Bay quarterback ever to do it, joining Brad Johnson in 2001 and Tom Brady in 2022.

Buccaneers' Skid Just Raised An Ugly Question About Baker Mayfield
The Buccaneers four-game slide has put a spotlight on a much bigger problem than one bad Sunday, and the latest loss only sharpened the conversation around the offense. In a 17-14 defeat to the Packers, Tampa Bay had to turn to rookie Jalon Daniels for his NFL debut with Baker Mayfield sidelined by injury, and while the result was rocky, it also underscored how little breathing room this team has created for itself during the skid.
Daniels finished with two interceptions and a touchdown, but the performance did not look dramatically worse than what the Buccaneers have been getting overall, which is where the real discomfort starts to settle in. If the offense continues to sputter no matter who is taking snaps, the issue may be less about the quarterback room and more about the coaching and structure around it, leaving Tampa Bay with an uncomfortable question as the losses pile up. Cowboys Have A Thursday Night Edge Fans Will Want To Track
A Thursday night trip to Dallas already comes with enough attention, but the Buccaneers are also walking into it with Baker Mayfield sidelined and undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels set to make the start. Tampa Bay will be trying to steady itself against a Cowboys team that is coming off a win and has the kind of established passing game that can make a primetime game look very different by halftime.
Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb loom as the obvious problems for Tampa Bay to solve, especially with the Cowboys carrying the edge in the betting market. For fans tracking the matchup beyond the final score, the more interesting wrinkle is how the prop market and the defensive rankings line up with a Buccaneers offense forced into a different shape than the one it expected entering Week 5. Bruce Arians Sounds Off As Bucs Season Reaches A Breaking Point
The Buccaneers have stumbled into October at 0-4, a start that leaves almost no margin for error and puts their playoff hopes under immediate pressure. Bruce Arians, now serving as a Senior Football Consultant, still believes there is a path forward, and he pointed to the coming month as a critical stretch for a team dealing with major injuries, a tough slate and very little early momentum.
What has kept Tampa Bay from being buried entirely is the defense, which has stayed strong by advanced metrics even as the offense has struggled to find consistency. A big part of that offensive issue has been the play up front, where the line has not delivered at the level the Buccaneers need, and until that changes, the season is likely to keep hovering at a breaking point.
