Jake Browning is making waves in Tampa Bay as he steps in to back up Baker Mayfield, eager to contribute to the Buccaneers' storied success. After an impressive run with the Cincinnati Bengals, Browning is ready for this fresh opportunity.
The Bucs acted swiftly to replace Teddy Bridgewater, who moved to the Detroit Lions, by signing Browning. Having spent the last three seasons with the Bengals, Browning made a significant impact, particularly in 2023.
During Joe Burrow's injury absences, Browning stepped up, throwing for 1,936 yards and 12 touchdowns. He led the Bengals to a 4-5 record in his nine-game stint, showcasing his skills with three 300-yard games.
His standout performance came in 2024 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he threw for 354 yards and a touchdown, completing an impressive 32-of-37 passes. He also demonstrated his mobility by adding 22 rushing yards and a touchdown, sparking a three-game winning streak with 953 passing yards and seven total scores.
Browning shared his enthusiasm for joining Tampa, citing the Buccaneers' winning culture as a major draw. "I had this one towards the top," he said, praising the team's recent success, including a Super Bowl win.
He expressed admiration for Baker Mayfield, noting similarities in their playing styles. "I've always been a fan of Baker Mayfield from afar," Browning said. "Neither of us are huge guys with a huge arm, but we can process quickly."
Browning is eager to learn from Mayfield and observe his leadership in the locker room.
The 2025 season was challenging for Browning, with just four starts. Despite a win against the AFC South-winning Jaguars, he struggled with six touchdowns against eight interceptions. Reflecting on the season, Browning admitted to trying to play "hero ball" during tough times, forcing throws and overextending himself.
He praised the Bucs' offensive line and receivers, and is particularly excited to work with new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson. Robinson, a former Bengals QB, brings valuable experience from his time with the Atlanta Falcons and a connection with Mayfield from their stint in Los Angeles.
Browning has heard positive things about Robinson, supported by his former coach Zac Taylor's familiarity with him. "When you're deciding where to go, you want to play for good people," Browning noted.
He wrapped up by highlighting his ability to stay calm and help his teammates remain focused, a key asset in high-pressure situations.
