Jacob Parrish: A Rising Star in Tampa Bay's Secondary
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers knew they had to address their secondary woes after a tough 2024 season, where only three teams allowed more passing yards. With their sights set on shoring up the defense, they made some strategic moves in the 2025 NFL Draft.
While the first round saw the Bucs adding firepower to their offense with Ohio State receiver Emeka Egbuka to support Baker Mayfield, the focus quickly shifted to defense. In the second round, they snagged Notre Dame's cornerback Benjamin Morrison. But it was their third-round pick, Jacob Parrish from Kansas State, who has everyone talking.
Parrish, an honorable mention All-Big 12 performer in 2023, impressed scouts with his blazing 4.35 speed at the NFL Combine. His ability to play both nickel and outside corner, coupled with a physical style of play, made him a perfect fit for the Bucs' defensive scheme.
Making an Immediate Impact
The Buccaneers had high hopes for Parrish, and he delivered beyond expectations. As the second youngest player on the roster, he logged the second most snaps among Tampa's corners, proving his mettle on the field.
With 76 tackles, including 50 solo, seven tackles for loss, two sacks, two interceptions, seven pass deflections, and a recovered fumble, Parrish made his presence felt. Pro Football Focus recognized his efforts, awarding him the fifth-highest grade among Tampa's defenders and naming him the top run defender with a 78.5 grade over 217 snaps.
However, there's room for growth. Parrish tied for second on the team with 14 missed tackles, earning a 45.5 grade in that area. Improving his tackling will be key as he heads into his second year.
Future CB1?
Could Parrish become Tampa's top cornerback next season? It's a real possibility.
As he approaches his 22nd birthday (though technically not this year, thanks to a leap year birthdate), his potential is undeniable. With Jamel Dean set to become an unrestricted free agent, the Bucs might find themselves leaning on Parrish as their primary corner.
Considering last year's draft investments and other free agency priorities, Parrish could very well enter training camp as CB1.
As the Buccaneers aim to reclaim the NFC South, Jacob Parrish's development will be a storyline to watch. His rookie season was just the beginning, and the future looks bright for this young defensive standout.
