Leonard Fournette is making noise again, and this time the former Buccaneers running back has aimed his criticism at Tampa Bay’s quarterback situation.
On the latest episode of the 4th and South Podcast, Fournette pushed the idea that Jalon Daniels should keep the starting job even after Baker Mayfield gets healthy. It’s a stance that adds fresh heat to a conversation the Bucs probably didn’t ask for, especially with Mayfield working his way back from injury.
“Jalon Daniels is the perfect fit for the Bucs right now. They’re winning.
When Baker was back there they weren’t winning nothing. So I think it was a blessing and a curse, I’m not wishing for nobody to get hurt, but at the same time he’s giving them more opportunity to win,” Fournette said.
He doubled down by suggesting Daniels and Mayfield are basically on equal footing when it comes to decision-making, pointing to Mayfield’s tendency to turn the ball over.
But the argument has plenty of holes. Tampa Bay is only 1-1 with Daniels under center, so this isn’t exactly a case of a backup dragging the team on a runaway heater and forcing the issue.
Daniels threw two interceptions in a loss to the Green Bay Packers, then bounced back in last week’s win over the Dallas Cowboys. That second outing came in a game where the Buccaneers also leaned heavily on the run, with Bucky Irving piling up 165 yards.
Daniels did his part in that win, finishing 19-of-25 for 189 yards and a touchdown. Still, the bigger context matters. Mayfield opened the season 0-3, but he didn’t have the benefit of that same kind of ground support, which makes it tough to declare Daniels the better option after one victory.
Fournette isn’t backing off, though. He still believes Daniels gives Tampa Bay its best shot to win right now.
Jarvis Landry, Fournette’s co-host and a former teammate of Mayfield’s, wasn’t having it. Landry pushed back, saying Mayfield is a winner and expects him to play good football when he’s back in the lineup. He also views Daniels as a capable backup, not someone who is about to take over as the franchise quarterback.
And that’s where this debate lands: no real quarterback controversy, just a loud opinion from Fournette. Mayfield is still the starter, and even if his play before the injury left plenty to be desired, the Buccaneers are counting on him to return as the leader of the offense.

Baker Mayfield's Thumb Suddenly Looms Over A Crucial Bucs Stretch
Baker Mayfields thumb has quickly become the hinge point of the Buccaneers next stretch, with Tampa Bay waiting to see how his recovery progresses after the injury sidelined him. The quarterback is due to test whether he can grip and throw the football soon, a key checkpoint for a team trying to stabilize its offense and get the season pointed in the right direction.
For now, the Bucs are preparing to move ahead without him against the Pittsburgh Steelers, with Jalon Daniels in line to start again. The more meaningful date may be Week 7 against the Carolina Panthers, when Mayfield could be back in the mix if the thumb responds well, giving Tampa Bay a chance to regain the kind of production it has been missing in his absence. Buccaneers Face A Familiar Problem Against Aaron Rodgers In Week 6
The Buccaneers head into their matchup with the Steelers looking to steady a season that still feels very much in progress, and the chess match up front could shape the afternoon as much as anything else. Tampa Bay has gotten encouraging signs on the ground from Bucky Irving, while Pittsburgh has leaned on a versatile offense built around Jaylin Warren, who has become the Steelers most productive weapon out of the backfield.
For Tampa Bay, the bigger concern is whether its defense can create enough disruption to make life uncomfortable for Aaron Rodgers. The Buccaneers have struggled to finish plays with their pass rush, and that is exactly the kind of issue Rodgers tends to expose. If the Bucs are going to leave with a result that helps their record, they will likely need more than just solid offense and a clean game script. [Read more 🡒]
Rueben Bain Jr. Is Giving The Bucs A Needed Defensive Hope
Rueben Bain Jr.s rookie season with the Buccaneers has been more about patience than splash plays so far, which is not what anyone envisioned when Tampa Bay added him to help the edge rush. The outside linebacker has been slowed by injuries, but the broader need is obvious: the Bucs have a strong secondary and are still looking for a pass rush that can make life easier on the back end and give the defense a more complete feel.
There are signs the picture may be turning. Larry Foote has liked what he has seen from Bain lately, and the rookie appears to be moving better after working through the shoulder and groin issues that interrupted his early progress. Tampa Bay can live with a developmental arc if the payoff comes later, but getting more from Bain would be especially important with the rest of the defense trying to build on that complementary structure.
