Week 5 opens under the lights in Arlington, and the setup gives Thursday Night Football a little extra bite. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are headed to Dallas facing a major offensive adjustment on a short week, still without Baker Mayfield and leaning into a game plan that has to be much more grounded. That puts a spotlight on the run game, the defense, and how well Tampa Bay can survive the kind of chaos Thursday games love to create.

Dallas, meanwhile, gets the home stage and the expectation that comes with it. In a matchup loaded with fantasy ripple effects and betting intrigue, the details matter.
Short-rest football tends to expose flaws, reward aggression, and turn one or two plays into the difference between a tight game and a runaway. With that in mind, there are three bold calls that stand out for this one.

The clearest path for Tampa Bay is to ride Bucky Irving and keep the offense from turning into a pass-heavy stress test. With a rookie quarterback making his first-ever short-week start, the Buccaneers have to protect the pocket, shorten the game, and avoid putting themselves in long-yardage situations where Dallas can tee off. Zac Robinson should lean hard on Irving, especially on early downs, with screen work and quick throws helping keep the Cowboys from dictating every snap.
Irving’s burst and balance make him the kind of back who can punish linebackers once he gets a little daylight. Dallas has shown cracks against disciplined gap runs and downhill perimeter tosses, and Tampa Bay can use that to its advantage. The prediction here is a big workload for Irving: 22-plus touches, more than 140 scrimmage yards, and two touchdowns as the engine of the Buccaneers’ offense.
But if Tampa Bay gets pushed into obvious passing downs, the trouble starts quickly. Dallas has the kind of secondary that can make mistakes expensive, with DaRon Bland and the newly acquired Joey Porter Jr. waiting for predictable throws.
Christian Parker should be able to unleash disguised coverage looks and simulated pressure once third-and-long shows up, and Jalon Daniels on a condensed week of practice is expected to have a hard time processing what’s coming at him. That opens the door for Bland and Porter Jr. to jump an errant out-route and come away with an interception that hands Dallas prime field position.
On the other side, the Buccaneers may try to heat up Dak Prescott with Todd Bowles’ usual mix of pressure and disguise, but Dallas has a clear answer if the Cowboys get the ball to CeeDee Lamb in the right spots. Prescott has historically been at his best when teams bring heavy blitz looks and he can target his top receiver, and McCarthy can help Lamb by moving him into the slot and using pre-snap motion to create cleaner matchups.
That should give Lamb room to work the intermediate areas of the field, especially on crossers, option routes, and in the red zone. The bold prediction is a big night for him: more than 120 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Put it all together, and Dallas looks built to win the turnover battle, control the line of scrimmage, and wear Tampa Bay down as the night goes on. The Buccaneers may hang around early, but without explosive passing plays to keep pace, the Cowboys are projected to turn that into a comfortable double-digit win that covers the spread.

Buccaneers Already Have Two Tough Offseason Contract Decisions
The early part of the season has already put Tampa Bay in an awkward spot with a pair of homegrown starters whose futures are suddenly far less straightforward than they looked not long ago. Outside linebacker Yaya Diaby and right guard Cody Mauch are both playing out the final year of their rookie deals, and both were expected to be key pieces as the Buccaneers tried to keep their core intact on both sides of the line of scrimmage.
Through the first four games, though, neither has made the kind of case that usually leads to a quick extension. Diabys pass rush production has tailed off, while Mauch has had a rough return from injury in both the run game and protection. If those trends hold, Tampa Bay could be staring at two more obvious free-agent decisions next spring, and neither one looks simple right now. [Read more 🡒]
Todd Bowles Heat Is Rising But Bucs History Says Plenty Too
The early part of the 2026 season has not gone the way Tampa Bay hoped, and the frustration is starting to spill over beyond the standings. Todd Bowles is suddenly part of the league-wide coaching conversation, with some bettors even tagging him as a possible first firing of the year, a reflection of how quickly the temperature can rise when a veteran team stumbles out of the gate.
Still, the Buccaneers own history matters here. Bowles is 35-37 in the regular season and 1-3 in the postseason since taking over in 2022, so there is real pressure around the program, but Tampa Bay ownership has not made a habit of cutting loose head coaches in the middle of a season. That track record makes any in-season move feel unlikely for now, even if the noise around Bowles keeps getting louder. [Read more 🡒]
Buccaneers Face A Brutal Thursday Test With Early Pressure Mounting
Thursday night brings a tricky reset point for Tampa Bay, which heads into Week 5 still searching for its first win and doing it without starting quarterback Baker Mayfield. The spotlight is on the kind of primetime matchup that can either steady a season or deepen the early damage, and the Buccaneers are walking into a Dallas team that will be eager to respond in front of its own crowd.
For Tampa Bay, the challenge is not just surviving the short week but finding enough stability to hang around against a Cowboys team that needs better defense while counting on its offense to set the tone at home. The matchup feels like a steep ask already, and the expectation around it is leaning heavily toward Dallas taking control by a wide margin. [Read more 🡒]
