Tampa Bay’s contract standoff with Baker Mayfield has already spilled beyond the negotiating table, and now one of his offensive linemen is making the support public.
Buccaneers guard Cody Mauch backed Mayfield on Friday, saying he believes the quarterback will come out of the situation just fine and eventually land in a better spot financially. After Mayfield said Thursday that he felt "disrespected" and "undervalued" in talks with the team, Mauch didn’t hesitate to take his side.
“It’s unfortunate, but he’s gonna go ball out, and it’s gonna get made right,” Mauch said. “No doubt in my mind he’s gonna do that and get even more money, so it’s gonna work out better for him in the end.”
Mauch also made it clear the offensive line views Mayfield as the real deal. He said the group "one hundred percent" considers him a franchise quarterback and pointed to the trust built between the quarterback and the guys protecting him.
“We trust him more than anything back there, too,” Mauch expressed. “I think we play well when we’re together. Also, if one of us gets beat, (Mayfield) is gonna go make some plays back there, so it means a lot that (Mayfield) has that much faith in us.”
The line’s takeaway from the situation, Mauch said, is that Mayfield has moved on from the contract drama and is locked in on football.
“The biggest thing we took away from it is that we’re playing ball now. He’s not worried about contract stuff. It’s all about the 2026 Bucs."
That public support comes after negotiations failed to produce a new deal and the team took issue with Mayfield speaking out about the process. The organization said what it offered was more in line with his value than Mayfield had suggested, even as the quarterback left the door open a crack for a possible deal during the season.
For now, though, the relationship has clearly been strained. Some have lined up with Mayfield, while others view the team’s approach as routine due diligence.
Mauch is firmly in the quarterback’s corner, and he’s not alone in believing Mayfield’s next payday will come.
There’s also a bit of overlap in timing here: Mauch is entering the final year of his own contract. The 2023 second-round pick is heading into the last season of his four-year rookie deal, which is worth about $7.5 million.
That adds another layer to the situation, because Mauch would likely feel a lot better about his own future if Tampa Bay takes care of Mayfield first. It would also give him a clearer read on where the franchise is headed.
For now, though, the message from the locker room is simple: Mayfield still has his teammates behind him. And based on Mauch’s comments, they expect this one to end with the quarterback getting paid.
