The Buccaneers’ 43-13 rout of the Panthers was the kind of performance that can make a season feel like it’s tilting back in the right direction. Tampa Bay finally put together a full three-phase effort, and it came at a time when the Bucs badly needed something to hang onto while trying to stay in the NFC South race.
But one big win doesn’t erase the bigger question hovering over this team. Tampa Bay is still 2-5, and there’s plenty of skepticism that the rest of the season will look anything like what unfolded against Carolina. NFL Draft OnSI analyst Justin Melo even has the Bucs pegged for the eighth pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, and he sees the front of the roster as the place to focus.
"It's been a disappointing season for a Tampa Bay Buccaneers team that entered 2026 with playoff aspirations, but a dominant Week 7 win over the Carolina Panthers restored some faith," Melo wrote. "With Baker Mayfield signed to an extension, strengthening the trenches on both offense and defense should be an offseason priority."
That’s one way to look at it. But the more glaring issue may be sitting elsewhere.
Even if Yaya Diaby is headed for free agency after the season, the expectation is that Tampa Bay will try to keep him in the fold. If that happens, and if the defensive line continues to develop with Rueben Bain Jr. and David Walker, the edge might not be where the Bucs need to invest their top draft capital.
The more urgent need is adding dynamic talent to the offense’s skill spots.
The run game is in good shape, but Tampa Bay could use help at both wide receiver and tight end. Chris Godwin has been a steady presence for the Bucs, yet his production has gone down year after year, and he’s no longer someone you can comfortably treat as a long-term answer.
Emeka Egbuka has also struggled since the second half of last season, though there’s still time for him to rebound. Even so, Tampa Bay needs another real threat to ease some of that burden.
The team likes Ted Hurst and Tez Johnson, but both are still young and not established enough to be counted on every week or every snap.
Tight end remains another area that needs attention, even with Cade Otton having signed a three-year extension this offseason. The Bucs would still like a player there who can make an impact on a consistent basis.
And with Baker Mayfield already extended before the season, the message is clear: Tampa Bay has to keep giving him help if it wants the offense to hold up over the next few years. If that doesn’t happen, the scoring issues will keep dragging the team down, and wins will stay hard to find.

Bucs May Have Found The Identity Todd Bowles Has Been Chasing
Todd Bowles has spent much of the season talking about the kind of team he wants the Buccaneers to be, and Sunday in the 43-13 win over Carolina offered another clear example of the blueprint. Tampa Bay leaned into its running game, stayed physical and handled the Panthers with the sort of discipline Bowles has pushed for since camp, turning a lopsided division win into another sign that the offense can impose its will when the ground game is humming.
Bucky Irving has become a big reason why. The second-year back has climbed to eighth in the NFL in rushing yards and is on pace for a career-best season after last years injuries slowed him down, giving the Bucs a runner who can keep drives moving and help control games. With the backfield producing and the offense looking more balanced, the bigger question now is whether this version of Tampa Bay can keep that edge when the competition tightens. [Read more 🡒]
Buccaneers Suddenly Have A Trade Deadline Decision Fans Didn't Expect
At 2-5, the Buccaneers are in a spot where every week can reshape the conversation around the trade deadline. A team that still sees a path in the NFC South has to balance the urge to stay patient with the need to patch obvious holes, and inside linebacker has emerged as one of the areas worth watching if Tampa Bay keeps itself in the race after Week 8.
One possible name being tossed into that conversation is Philadelphias Zack Baun, a player whose recent rise has made him a natural fit for teams looking to upgrade the middle of the defense. The question for Tampa Bay is whether the cost of making that kind of move matches the urgency of its season, since any pursuit would have to line up with both the salary and the draft capital such a deal would demand. Bucs O-Line Just Created A New Talking Point Fans Can't Ignore
The Buccaneers offensive line turned in one of its most encouraging performances of the season in Week 7 against Carolina, even with a notable piece of the puzzle missing. Tampa Bay still piled up 258 rushing yards and did not allow a sack, a strong showing that stood out even more because the group had to adjust on the fly at right tackle.
Ben Chukwuma was the next man up and handled the assignment well enough to draw praise from Todd Bowles afterward. With the Bucs already dealing with injuries up front, the bigger question now is how this performance shapes the conversation around their depth, especially if the line keeps creating room in the run game while protecting the quarterback the way it did against the Panthers.
