Bucs Suddenly Face An Uncomfortable Baker Mayfield Question

With Baker Mayfield's future in limbo, the Buccaneers are eyeing Duke standout Darian Mensah as a potential successor in the upcoming NFL Draft.

At this point in the offseason, the speculation machine is already running hot, and one of the more eye-catching projections has the Buccaneers looking at life after Baker Mayfield sooner rather than later.

Sports Illustrated NFL Draft analyst Justin Melo recently mapped out how the first round of the 2027 NFL Draft could play out, and he sent Tampa Bay in a direction that would raise eyebrows: with the 19th pick, he had the Buccaneers taking former Duke quarterback Darian Mensah.

"Baker Mayfield is in a contract year and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been hesitant to make a long-term commitment," Melo wrote. "Darian Mensah threw for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns for the ACC champion Duke Blue Devils last season. Mensah now transfers to Miami, which helped Cam Ward become a No. 1 overall pick at quarterback."

Mensah brings the kind of upside that can make these kinds of mock-draft swings feel plausible. After his move to Miami, his stock could climb quickly, especially with the Hurricanes expected to field a strong team one season after reaching the national title game.

Still, the idea of Tampa Bay using a first-round pick on a quarterback feels jarring to plenty of fans who see Mayfield as the answer for the long haul. He has delivered plenty of big moments since taking over, and there’s a real belief around the team that he’ll remain the starter for years.

But the contract situation keeps the door open. Mayfield has not been extended, and the Buccaneers have not shown much urgency in locking him up. He has also made it clear that he won’t let talks drag into training camp.

If no agreement is reached before then, Mayfield could simply play out the final year of his deal and head into next offseason as an unrestricted free agent.

And if that happens, a quarterback in the first round of next year’s draft stops sounding like a wild guess and starts looking like a very real possibility.

Undrafted Bucs Rookie Is Suddenly Shaking Up The Backup QB Picture

An undrafted rookie quarterback has already done enough in Tampa Bay to turn a routine offseason depth chart into something worth watching. Jalon Daniels has stood out during offseason work and rookie minicamp, and the early buzz around him has been strong enough to get the Buccaneers thinking beyond the usual camp arm conversation.

Jason Licht has made it clear the backup job is not a formality, and Daniels has put himself in the mix with Jake Browning and Connor Bazelak. For a player who arrived without draft status to lean on, the next stretch matters a lot, because training camp and preseason will determine whether this is just a promising run or the start of a real roster push. Baker Mayfield Finally Addressed What Was Behind His Late-Season Fade

Baker Mayfields second-half slide in 2025 had already prompted plenty of postmortem debate in Tampa Bay, with playcalling, his own tendencies and injuries all getting tossed into the mix as possible explanations. On the Netflix series Quarterback, Mayfield finally confirmed what had been lurking beneath the numbers: he was trying to keep the Buccaneers afloat while dealing with a body that was far from right.

The timing helps explain why the team moved to add Jake Browning as extra insurance behind him, even as Mayfield says he is healthy again and looking ahead to a contract extension before training camp. For the Buccaneers, the issue is no longer just what happened during the fade, but how much of it should shape the next conversation about their quarterback room and the deal they hope to settle before camp opens. Bucs Draft Miss Is Heading Into A Defining Camp Battle

Chris Braswell is heading into training camp with a lot more pressure on him than most second-round picks usually face this early in their careers. The Buccaneers have kept adding to the outside linebacker mix, bringing in Rueben Bain Jr. and Al-Quadin Muhammad while also expecting David Walker back, which only tightens a room that already has established competition for snaps and roles.

For Braswell, the next few weeks are about more than just showing flashes in camp or carrying that work into preseason games. He needs to prove he still fits into Tampa Bays pass-rush plans at a time when the depth chart is crowded and every practice rep matters, making this one of the more defining stretches of his young Bucs career.
