The Bucs will be without two of their standout rookies on Sunday, with head coach Todd Bowles ruling out edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr. and inside linebacker Josiah Trotter after Friday’s practice.
Bain has been dealing with a groin injury that kept him out of all three practices this week, and he wasn’t even out watching from the sideline the way some injured players do. Trotter, meanwhile, had been around the team all week but limited to running on his own until Friday, when he finally got on the field for drills with the inside linebackers. Even so, it wasn’t enough to clear him for Week 3.
“It’s probably a toleration thing,” Bowles said. “We’ll see how he feels.”
Trotter’s issue is a low grade sprain in his left shoulder, and the team is treating it week to week.
Bain’s absence leaves Tampa Bay with Anthony Nelson back in the mix after he missed Wednesday’s practice but was on the field the last two days. He’ll be available Sunday, along with Yaya Diaby, Al-Quadin Muhammad and David Walker. Walker is the only edge rusher on the roster to record a sack this season.
At inside linebacker, the Bucs will turn to a combination of SirVocea Dennis and Christian Rozeboom in place of Trotter. Bowles said both will play depending on the package, and the team’s next starter at the spot will come from that group.
Tampa Bay also expects Jacob Parrish back after he sat out last week. That creates a little more competition at corner, especially with Zyon McCollum and Benjamin Morrison both playing well so far. Bowles said of Parrish, “He looks like his old self,” as he continues to ramp up.
There’s also some curiosity around how much Jalen McMillan will be used after making his season debut last game. He played only seven snaps, though McMillan said the original plan was for him to get 30. With the Bucs offense struggling and a very aggressive Vikings defense on deck, Tampa Bay could use more from him this week.
