Tampa Bay’s offense is heading into Week 7 short-handed, and the biggest absence is Emeka Egbuka.
The Buccaneers have ruled out the wideout for Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers because of a foot injury and a concussion. Egbuka had been Tampa Bay’s top receiver this season, so his absence leaves a noticeable hole for a team trying to keep pace in the NFC South.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield is set to return after missing the last three games with a dislocated thumb suffered in Week 3, but he won’t have Egbuka available to work with. That matters for an offense already off to a 1-5 start and sitting multiple games behind Carolina in the division.
Egbuka’s production through six games has been steady: 28 catches on 49 targets for 240 yards and two touchdowns. He has also run the ball twice for 11 yards and another score. His role has been enormous, too, as he’s been on the field for 85.8 percent of Tampa Bay’s offensive snaps in 2026.
With him sidelined, the Buccaneers will lean on Chris Godwin, Bucky Irving, Cade Otton and others to absorb the missing production.
Irving, in particular, looks positioned for a bigger role. Carolina has been vulnerable on the ground, allowing 5.1 yards per carry, which is the worst mark in the league, and the Panthers also rank 24th in EPA/Rush.
That lines up well for a back who has picked up steam lately. Irving has logged 40 carries and four receptions over his last two games, and he averaged 4.7 yards per carry overall. He has only gone over this line in three of six games this season, but two of those came with Mayfield at quarterback.
Mayfield’s return also matters in the passing game. He targeted Irving 15 times over the first three weeks, but since then Irving has seen just six total targets. With Egbuka out and Mayfield back under center, Irving could be in line for a larger workload as a receiver, too.
He was on the field for a season-high 85.1 percent of Tampa Bay’s snaps in Week 6, and with the Bucs thin on playmakers, the matchup gives him a chance to handle plenty of the offensive load against Carolina.

Bucs Rookie Jalon Daniels Got A Moment Fans Will Want To See
Jalon Daniels has already had a stretch with the Buccaneers that most rookies only imagine, stepping into the starting role after Baker Mayfields injury and living through both an encouraging win and a tough loss in those early outings. So when the backup quarterback got the chance to line up across from Aaron Rodgers after Tampa Bays game against the Steelers, it was the kind of crossover moment that felt bigger than the scoreboard.
The postgame exchange added another layer to a night Daniels will remember, with the two quarterbacks meeting and swapping jerseys after the game. Rodgers also made a point to show respect for Daniels during the CBS broadcast, and for a young passer trying to settle into his place in the league, that kind of attention from an idol carries a little extra weight. Buccaneers Face A Trade Deadline Twist If Sunday Goes Wrong
The next week could say a lot about how the Buccaneers view the rest of this season, and not just because of what happens on the field against Carolina. Tampa Bay is sitting at 1-5, yet still technically alive in the NFC South race, which puts a real spotlight on the game and the front offices appetite for patience heading toward the November 10 trade deadline.
If things go badly on Sunday, the conversation around the roster may shift quickly from chasing a division title to weighing veteran value. ESPNs Jeremy Fowler has pointed to the possibility of Tampa Bay becoming a seller in the right circumstances, with names like Chris Godwin, Kenneth Gainwell and Vita Vea already surfacing in the discussion, though no move has been made. For a team that still has postseason hope, the stakes feel unusually split between the scoreboard and the trade market. [Read more 🡒]
Buccaneers Just Caught A Huge Break For Baker Mayfield In Week 7
The Buccaneers got a helpful development ahead of their Week 7 matchup with Carolina, as the Panthers will be missing a key edge presence after Jaelan Phillips was officially ruled out because of a hamstring injury. Tampa Bay has been looking for every edge it can find in a division game on the road, and taking one of Carolinas more disruptive defenders off the board changes the picture a bit for Baker Mayfield and an offense that can use a cleaner pocket.
Phillips had already sat out the Panthers three practices leading into the game, and Carolinas final injury report offered more uncertainty beyond him. Thomas Incoom is also set to miss the matchup with a calf injury, leaving the Panthers thinner up front than they would prefer as they try to slow down Tampa Bay. [Read more 🡒]
