The Buccaneers got more injury news Wednesday morning after an already rough joint practice with the Jaguars, and this time it involved one of their most important young players.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that first-round pick Rueben Bain Jr. suffered an AC sprain, but the diagnosis was described as “nothing serious” and he is expected to be ready for Week 1 against the Bengals on Sept. 13.

For Tampa Bay, the timing is still far from ideal, even if the injury sounds relatively minor. The Bucs have just one more practice this week - Wednesday’s joint session in Jacksonville - before Friday night’s preseason finale, and Bain was already highly unlikely to play in that game. That gives him time to rest, get treatment and aim squarely at the opener.
The encouraging part of the report is the “nothing serious” language. A mild AC sprain can usually heal in 1-2 weeks, and with 18 days left before the Bucs meet Cincinnati, Tampa Bay should have reason to believe its top pick will be available.
Still, this is the kind of setback teams want to avoid in late August, especially with a premier edge rusher. The Bucs will be careful here, because rushing Bain back would create the risk of a setback and cost him more time. The staff and coaches figure to handle him cautiously, particularly with the role he’s expected to play in a pass rush that already looks much better.
Bain did get a taste of the preseason last Saturday night against the Chiefs, and he looked excellent in his NFL debut. Tampa Bay needs him healthy and fully available if it wants that defense to reach its ceiling in 2026.
Bain now joins a growing list of Buccaneers who are being brought along with Week 1 in mind.
Tristan Wirfs, who missed most of camp because of a hamstring injury, returned to limited 1-on-1 and 11-on-11 work Tuesday morning. The goal there is straightforward: get the All-Pro left tackle to opening day feeling right and back to 100%.
Vita Vea is in the same general lane. The veteran nose tackle and two-time Pro Bowler missed most of camp with what was described as a back injury, though he was also “holding in” while waiting on a contract extension, which he eventually received. He, too, returned to limited 11-on-11 work Tuesday and will be eased back with Week 1 as the target.
Second-year cornerback Benjamin Morrison has also been working through a hamstring issue for much of the summer and has only recently returned to full team work. His preseason availability remains unclear, but the Bucs seem focused on having him ready for the regular season.
Now Bain is part of that group as well.
There are still 18 days before Week 1, which should be enough time for the rookie pass rusher to recover from an AC sprain that has been described as “nothing serious.” But given the excitement he’s brought since the Bucs made him the No. 15 overall pick in April, the injury news was enough to make plenty of people flinch.

Mike Evans Is Giving Buccaneers Fans A Familiar Worry Again
Mike Evans first training camp with the 49ers has already brought a little too much familiar discomfort, as the veteran wide receiver has been dealing with a string of minor injuries that have interrupted his preparation. The latest issue is a groin injury that has kept him from practicing, adding another layer of concern for a player the team brought in on a three-year contract with guaranteed money and per-game roster bonuses.
For a player whose availability has long mattered as much as his production, even these early camp setbacks are enough to make fans uneasy about what the season might look like. The 49ers are counting on Evans to settle in quickly and be a reliable part of the offense, but the recurring nature of these injuries has left his status and workload worth watching closely as camp moves on. Buccaneers Pass Rush Plan Just Hit A Worrying Rueben Bain Snag
Rueben Bain Jr.s first summer with the Buccaneers has already hit an unexpected pause. The first-round pick suffered an AC sprain during a joint practice against the Jacksonville Jaguars, a setback that briefly disrupted what had been building into an important stretch for Tampa Bays pass rush plans.
The good news for the Buccaneers is that the injury is not considered serious, and Bain is expected to be ready for Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals. He sat out the next days practice and is likely to spend the rest of the offseason focused on recovery, but the team appears to have avoided anything that would threaten his early-season availability. Bucs Receiver Battle Just Got More Interesting After Mike Evans Exit
Mike Evans is gone after 13 seasons, and the Buccaneers are suddenly looking at a receiver room that has a very different feel to it. For a team that spent years leaning on one of the leagues most reliable targets, the focus now shifts to the pieces still in place, with Baker Mayfield already signaling confidence in Chris Godwin, Emeka Egbuka, Jalen McMillan and rookie Ted Hurst as Tampa Bay sorts out how to replace Evans production and leadership.
Godwin brings the most proven track record, while Egbuka and McMillan are expected to have bigger roles as the Bucs reshape the passing game around them. Health and experience will matter as camp and the season unfold, and Hurst adds another layer of intrigue as a rookie trying to earn his place in the mix. The challenge is obvious enough, but so is the opportunity, because this could be the group that determines how smoothly Tampa Bay moves into life after Evans. [Read more 🡒]
