Warren Sapp’s legacy in Tampa Bay is secure. What happened over the weekend just added another flashpoint to the long-running conversation about how the Hall of Fame defensive tackle conducts himself away from football.
A video that spread online showed Sapp kicking a Florida State fan, and the clip immediately put his behavior back under the spotlight. In the footage, Sapp is holding an umbrella while a Florida State fan is talking trash in a playful way.
The fan then pokes his head under the umbrella without Sapp inviting him in. Sapp can be heard saying, “Don’t do that,” before he pokes the umbrella toward the man and eventually kicks him.
How that moment gets interpreted depends on who’s watching. Sapp’s detractors will view it as assault.
His defenders will argue the fan was baiting him and got the response he was looking for. Either way, it was the kind of scene that guarantees a reaction.
This isn’t the first time Sapp has landed in trouble. Earlier this year, he was charged with obstructing staff at Hollywood City Hall after a cell phone video showed him harassing its police and employees.
At the same time, there’s another side to Sapp’s public story. In 2017, he announced that he would donate his brain when he dies to help the CTE research effort.
He also spent time around coaching recently. Sapp was on Deion Sanders’ Colorado staff during the 2024 and 2025 seasons, serving as a senior quality-control analyst and graduate assistant in 2024 before moving up to defensive pass-rush coordinator for 2025.
None of that changes the football résumé that made him a Buccaneers icon in the first place. Over nine seasons in Tampa Bay, Sapp was a six-time All-Pro, including four first-team selections, and he was elected to the Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 2013.

Bucs Suddenly Need Help At One Position Before Panthers Game
The Buccaneers are heading into their matchup with the Panthers with another roster shuffle on their hands, and this one hits a spot where depth already mattered. Christian Rozeboom had been a useful piece at inside linebacker, giving Tampa Bay some stability behind the starters, but the team moved him to injured reserve as it adjusts for the stretch run.
In the same transaction window, the Bucs brought David Sills V back from injured reserve, giving them an extra body at receiver at a time when that group is taking hits of its own. The timing matters because Tampa Bay may need him sooner rather than later, which leaves the defense to sort out how it replaces Rozeboom while the offense keeps bracing for more attrition before Sunday. Bucs Get Encouraging Injury News With Sunday Still In Doubt
The Buccaneers got a little healthier on the practice field this week, with several players back after dealing with illnesses. Bucky Irving and Zyon McCollum were both limited participants, while Calijah Kancey was able to log a full workout, giving Tampa Bay at least some encouraging signs as it prepares for a divisional matchup with Carolina.
Emeka Egbukas status remains one of the bigger questions hanging over the week, and right tackle Luke Goedekes availability is also still unclear. With both sides releasing full injury reports, the Bucs have some positives to work with, but the final picture for Sunday still feels far from settled. [Read more 🡒]
Baker Mayfields Return Came With Unusual Help Bucs Fans Didnt See Coming
Baker Mayfield is lining up to return to the Buccaneers after missing three games with a dislocated thumb, and his comeback has included an unusual assist from across the parking lot. The Tampa Bay Rays helped come up with a customized glove meant to protect the injury while still letting Mayfield grip and throw, a small but notable example of how often the two teams around the bay end up overlapping when one of them needs a little help.
Mayfield has already been practicing with the glove and is expected to start the upcoming game against the Carolina Panthers, giving Tampa Bay a timely boost as it tries to get its offense back on track. For a quarterback trying to return cleanly from a hand injury, the details matter, and this one has turned into a story of local collaboration as much as a football update. [Read more 🡒]
