Bucs Just Sent A Wild Message In The NFC South Race

The Buccaneers demonstrate that a powerful running game and stout defense can steal the spotlight from a quarterback in their historic victory over the Falcons.

Tampa Bay’s strangest win of the season came without a completed pass, and somehow it still looked controlled from start to finish.

On a rain-soaked Sunday, the Bucs blanked the Falcons 16-0 by leaning on four interceptions, a punishing ground game and an offensive line that kept the whole thing moving. The victory pushed Tampa Bay to within a half game of Carolina for the NFC South lead.

The headline-grabber is obvious: the Bucs did not complete a pass. It was the first time since Sept. 29, 1974, when the Bills beat the Jets 16-12, that an NFL team won a game with zero pass completions, according to Pro Football Reference.

Baker Mayfield attempted only three passes, including one Bucky Irving dropped, and the Bucs never needed much more from him. Irving and Kenny Gainwell carried the load, with Tampa Bay’s run game doing the heavy lifting all afternoon. Irving finished with 170 rushing yards, while Gainwell added 140.

Mayfield went 0-for-3, but he still posted a passer rating of 39.6, better than Atlanta quarterback Michael Penix Jr. Penix, the Dade City product, finished 8-of-24 for 125 yards and four interceptions for a 12.0 rating.

This was the second straight week Tampa Bay won with almost no passing production. Mayfield threw for just 64 yards in last week’s win at Carolina.

The game’s tone was set early by Alex Anzalone, who intercepted passes on back-to-back drives in the first quarter. The first turnover nearly turned into a touchdown, but Irving had the ball knocked loose a step from the end zone. The second interception led to a field goal and a 6-0 Tampa Bay lead, and Atlanta spent the rest of the afternoon chasing.

The Falcons still had a chance late in the third quarter, down by only nine. Then the Bucs’ run game slammed the door.

Irving burst through a seam for 46 yards to the Atlanta 35, and two plays later Gainwell broke three tackles on a 28-yard run to the 6. Tampa Bay finished the drive with its only touchdown and stretched the lead to 16-0.

The Bucs also took a hit when outside linebacker Yaya Diaby left in the first half with a knee injury. Diaby had come off the best pass-rushing performance of his career, with three sacks in last week’s win at Carolina.

The win also came with the NFC South still stuck in the same place it’s been all season: no team with a winning record as November arrives.

And Tampa Bay’s schedule is about to get a lot tougher. The Bucs head to Chicago next week to face the Bears, then come out of their bye with a trip to Detroit to play the Lions. Tampa Bay has already lost to the Vikings and Packers, so stealing one in Chicago or Detroit would be a major result.

Bucs Next Two Games Could Force A Deadline Decision Licht Hates

Jason Licht has never been eager to deal players away, and that history is part of what makes the next stretch so important for Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers are staring at a deadline decision that could force the front office into a move it would rather avoid, with the next two games serving as the kind of test that can change how a team views its own roster and its chances for the rest of the season.

If the Bucs fail to win at least one of those games, the conversation around potential trade candidates could get loud in a hurry. Several veterans are already being discussed as possible chips, and the mix of contract situations and recent production gives Tampa Bay plenty to weigh before the deadline arrives, even if Lichts instinct has always been to hold rather than sell. Buccaneers Just Made History In A Way Fans Wont Believe

A game like this tends to get remembered for one odd stat, but the Buccaneers built it the hard way in a 16-0 win over Atlanta. Tampa Bay leaned almost entirely on the ground, piling up a franchise-record 324 rushing yards while the defense kept the Falcons from ever finding a rhythm, turning the afternoon into a throwback slog that looked nothing like a modern NFL box score.

Baker Mayfield finished 0-for-3 through the air with minus-two net passing yards, yet the Bucs still controlled the game by staying committed to the run and letting their defense create extra chances. It was the kind of win that raises eyebrows around the league and inside the locker room, because the next question is not how they pulled it off, but how often this formula can actually travel. Bucs Face A Huge NFC South Test As Turnaround Gets Real

The Buccaneers are stepping into a game that can tell a lot about where this season is headed, and the timing could hardly be bigger. Tampa Bay and Atlanta meet in a crucial NFC South matchup that could help shape the division race, with both clubs trying to turn early-season frustration into something more stable. The Bucs come in off a win over Carolina, while the Falcons have their own momentum after beating San Francisco, which gives this one the feel of a real checkpoint rather than just another divisional date on the schedule.

For Tampa Bay, the spotlight stays on Baker Mayfield and Bucky Irving as the offense tries to keep building after the recent uptick. Atlanta brings plenty of problems of its own, especially with Bijan Robinson and Kyle Pitts giving the Falcons two dangerous options to lean on. The Bucs have already shown they can respond after a rough stretch, but this is the kind of test that can reveal whether the turnaround is for real or still a work in progress. [Read more 🡒]
