The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Jets got plenty of work in during Tuesday morning’s joint practice in New Jersey - just not all of it was the kind either team wanted.
What started as a preseason tune-up turned into a chippy, escalating session that featured two separate fights between the clubs. The loudest moment came in the second dust-up, when Buccaneers right tackle Luke Goedeke reportedly sent one Jets helmet flying 20 yards down the field after the scuffle broke out.
According to New York beat reporter Connor Hughes on X, formerly Twitter, the confrontation followed a Jairus Monroe interception of Baker Mayfield.
“HUGE fight between #Bucs offense and #Jets defense,” posted the Jets reporter. “It ended with Goedeke coming out and just launching a Jets helmet 20+ yards.
Stiggers was involved, but so were both sidelines. I mean, that was a FIGHT.
Came after a Monroe INT of Mayfield.”
That wasn’t the first flare-up of the morning. The initial fight also involved Goedeke and Jets edge rusher David Bailey. After Goedeke reportedly stonewalled the rookie in a one-on-one drill, Bailey slapped him in the head, Goedeke answered back, and both players had to be pulled apart.
New York cornerback Qwantez Stiggers was the player who lost his helmet in that first incident, according to Ralph Vacciano, another team beat reporter, on X.
The temperature didn’t drop after that. Later, Jets defensive tackle Darrell Jackson traded punches with a Buccaneers offensive lineman, Hughes reported. That sequence led to the second joint practice being called off, at least for the time being.
The Buccaneers were unhappy with that decision, and the session could be rescheduled. With both teams trying to build toward turnaround campaigns in 2026, Friday night’s preseason opener may end up offering the first real snapshot of where they stand.
