NFL football is back, and the Buccaneers are heading into Week 1 with a handful of reasons for optimism as they prepare to face the Bengals on Sept. 13. Tampa Bay’s opener comes with plenty of storylines, but the biggest ones all point toward a Bucs team that could come out of the gate fast.
One of the most intriguing names to watch is Rueben Bain. He may not profile as a huge sack producer, but the Bucs didn’t draft him to chase numbers alone.
His game is built around pressure, and that should matter against a Bengals offensive line that has been suspect for some time. Add in Joe Burrow’s tendency to hold the ball longer than many top quarterbacks, and the setup looks favorable for Bain to make an early impact.
The prediction here is simple: he gets at least one sack and announces himself in Week 1.
Tampa Bay’s passing game could also be in a good spot if Chris Godwin gets the kind of workload that seems likely. Emeka Egbuka is still working back from a toe strain, and Jalen McMillan is dealing with a knee injury, so both could be limited even if they suit up.
That could push more of the load toward Godwin, who looks healthier than he has in recent years and is expected to handle the slot role in a Zac Robinson offense that leans on that position. Baker Mayfield should be able to rely on him early and often, and Godwin has a track record of producing in season openers.
Another young Buck to keep an eye on is Josiah Trotter. The second-round linebacker out of Missouri is in position to start alongside Alex Anzalone in Week 1, and the early read is that he’s ready to make it count.
Trotter has flashed as an instinctive run defender who shoots gaps with force, and he’s also shown he can be effective as a blitzer. That versatility should give Todd Bowles plenty to work with, but the biggest immediate impact may come against the run.
The expectation is that Trotter piles up tackles for loss and leads the team in tackles in his first game as a Buccaneer.
Mayfield is another reason the Bucs feel set up for a strong opener. He’s been hot in season debuts since arriving in Tampa Bay, throwing at least two touchdowns in each of his three Week 1 starts with the team for a total of nine.
He also enters this season after not landing the extension he wanted, which gives him extra motivation to play at a high level. With Zac Robinson’s offense in place and a Bengals secondary that looks vulnerable, Mayfield has a chance to put up another big opening-night stat line.
He’ll have Godwin, Ted Hurst and both of his pass-catching backs, Bucky Irving and Kenny Gainwell, available to him.
The final prediction is the one Bucs fans care about most: Tampa Bay starts 1-0. The Buccaneers have won four straight season openers under Todd Bowles, and the Bengals have a reputation for getting off to slow starts. Put that together, and the Bucs look positioned to open the season with a win.
