Tampa Bay’s final stretch of preseason preparation comes with a familiar face on the other sideline. The Buccaneers are set to work against the Jacksonville Jaguars in joint practices this week before the teams meet Friday night, and that means Todd Bowles will be lining up against former Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen.
Bowles made it clear on Sunday that the relationship between the two hasn’t changed, even after Coen left Tampa Bay to become Jacksonville’s head coach.
"Me and Liam have always been great," Bowles said on Sunday. "It’s been great the whole time.
Our relationship hasn’t changed a bit. We talk.
We text. We bounce things off each other."
The Bucs’ head coach said he is eager for the matchup and noted he is willing to use the "full gambit."
For Tampa Bay, the practices and preseason game offer a useful test against a strong opponent, but they also bring a reunion. Coen spent the 2024 season as the Bucs’ offensive coordinator and helped Baker Mayfield put together his most productive year as a starter, with 4,500 passing yards, 41 touchdowns and a franchise-record 71.4% completion percentage.
After that season, Coen was expected to return to the same role before choosing to take over in Jacksonville. The move may have frustrated some Bucs fans, but Bowles and others in the building have continued to speak highly of him and stay in touch.
Coen’s first year as a head coach was a major success. He guided the Jaguars from 4-13 to 13-4, one of the best turnarounds ever by a first-year NFL bench boss.
Tampa Bay, meanwhile, moved on from Josh Grizzard after he wasn’t able to match Coen’s results. The team brought in Zac Robinson from the Atlanta Falcons, another coach from the Sean McVay tree.
Robinson and Coen also know each other well. They worked together for two seasons, and Robinson has said the two still speak often and continue to help one another as playcallers.
Stylistically, the similarities are obvious. Both coaches lean on heavy motion and pre-snap movement to create advantages for their skill players.
Coen even pointed to Robinson’s system at the NFL Owners Meetings, saying Mayfield should benefit from an offense that looks more like the one he thrived in last season.
"Obviously their connection - they have a prior relationship, and again, that definitely helps with Baker," Coen said."He’s going to probably be teed off - a little ticked off to have a better season, get back to the playoffs and do some of those things."

Bucs Defense Drew Attention After Jaguars Star's Practice Scare
Joint practices are supposed to give teams a sharper look at themselves, but the Buccaneers ended up part of a more concerning scene when Jaguars receiver Brian Thomas Jr. went down with a left shoulder injury. Thomas did not return to practice afterward, turning an otherwise useful preseason session into one that immediately shifted attention toward the health of one of Jacksonvilles top pass catchers.
Liam Coen said Thomas is expected to be ready for the season opener against the Cleveland Browns, which will calm some of the alarm for now. Rueben Bain Jr. may not have taken the field in the Buccaneers preseason game against the Jets, but he still found a way to get people talking when Tampa Bay met the Chiefs. The rookie edge rusher showed up in a facemask inspired by Batman villain Bane, a fitting bit of edge for a player who has already started drawing attention for the kind of physical style that can translate quickly in the NFL.
Bain has been linked to former defender James Harrison because of the way he projects as a pass rusher, and the early signs have given Bucs fans something to watch beyond the box score. He already made a nod to franchise history by wearing Warren Sapps jersey when he signed his rookie contract, and moments like that help sell the idea that Bain understands the standard he is walking into, even before the real work of the season begins.
