One of the biggest eyes-on battles will be on the edge, where the Buccaneers want to see what rookie Bain can do against two Jets tackles who are expected to start this season. Bain Jr. has already put together a strong camp and looks positioned to open his rookie year next to Yaya Diaby. Olu Fashanu and Armand Membou both bring serious talent at tackle, so if Bain can make noise against either of them, the buzz around him will only grow.
Another key matchup comes in the secondary, where Zyon McCollum will be tested by Garrett Wilson. McCollum sits at No. 1 on the Bucs’ cornerback depth chart, and expectations are high for him heading into the season.
Wilson, meanwhile, has been one of the more underrated receivers in the league and has shown throughout his career that he can function as a true No. 1 option for the Jets. So instead, Trotter gets Hall, and that’s no downgrade in terms of difficulty. Hall is one of the better all-around backs in the NFL, dangerous as both a runner and a receiver, and he should give Trotter a valuable look against a high-end playmaker.
Up front, Bailey versus Goedeke should bring plenty of intrigue. Bailey was the second overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft, and plenty of evaluators believed he was the best pass rusher in the class. Goedeke has already earned a reputation as one of the NFL’s top right tackles, which makes this a compelling clash even before the first snap.
On the other side of the Buccaneers’ line, Chukwuma will also get a worthwhile challenge. He has done well as the backup left tackle while Tristan Wirfs works through a minor injury, and facing a player like Bailey should help prepare him for the more athletic rushers he may need to deal with if Wirfs has to miss time.
Finally, there’s a rookie-on-rookie matchup that should be especially fun to track. Hurst has been impressive for Tampa Bay in practice, particularly as a red-zone threat.
Ponds has also shown promise as young depth for the Jets and could wind up with a meaningful role down the line. It’s the kind of early-career showdown that can tell you a little something about both players as they settle into the league.
